Car Seat Warmer

The same day my church gave me the wonderful Lexus, I received a package from Amazon.  It was on my wife’s name (and I found my name on it later as well), so I did not open it.  She came home the next day (she slept over at her sister’s house).  When she came home, I asked her what she ordered from Amazon.  She said nothing.

교회에서 렉서스를 받은 바로 그 날, 아마존에서 택배가 왔다.  아내 이름으로 와서 (나중에 내 이름도 써 있는 걸 발견했다) 뜯지 않고 남겨뒀다.  아내가 다음날 와서 (여동생네 집에서 잤다) 아마존에서 뭘 또 샀냐고 물어보니 아무 것도 안샀다는 것이다.

We opened the huge box and there was two car seat cover cushions with electric warmer.  I did not order it, neither my wife.  And I found the gift message.  It was from the PNC (Pastor Nominating Committee) in Southern Indiana where I applied.

큰 상자를 뜯어보니 자동차 시트 덮개 쿠션이 두 개 있는데, 열선이 포함되어 있는 것이다.  나는 이런 걸 주문한 적이 없고, 아내도 없다고 한다.  상자에서 선물 메세지를 발견했다.  내가 지원했던 남부 인디애나 주에 있는 목사 청빙 위원회에서 보낸 것이었다.

The cost of the gift is little more then $30, but the price is not important.  I was so deeply moved, not because it is expensive but because of the fact that they think of me.  They knew that my car’s heater is not working.  We just met only once and I am not their pastor, but merely one of applicants.

선물 가격은 30불이 조금 넘는다.  하지만 가격이 중요한 게 아니다.  정말 감동을 받았는데, 비싼 선물이어서가 아니라, 그들이 날 생각해 준다는 사실 때문이었다.  내 차 히터가 작동하지 않는 걸 알고 있어서 이걸 사준 것이다.  단지 한 번 만났을 뿐인데, 내가 목사도 아니고 단지 수많은 지원자 중 한명일 뿐이데 말이다.

I installed it on my old Neon where there is not heater.  This Christmas was literally the warmest one.  Praise be to God and thanks to Southern Indiana PNC.

이걸 히터가 없는 옛차인 네온에 설치했다.  이번 성탄절은 정말 말 그대로 가장 따뜻한 성탄절이 되었다.  하나님께 찬양을 드리고, 남부 인디애나의 목사 청빙 위원회에도 감사를 드린다.

Lexus ES 350

It’s late night but I cannot get asleep.  I still cannot believe what happened today.  Pastor’s secretary asked me to come to church because the pastor wants to see me.  So I went to church.  We had a little chat, and he wanted to walk outside.  And there was red Lexus ES 350 with ribbons!

지금 꽤 밤이 늦었는데, 잠이 오질 않는다.  아직까지도 오늘 일어난 일이 믿기지 않는다.  목사님 비서가 연락이 와서 목사님이 날 보고 싶어 한다고 해서 교회에 갔다.  잠시 몇가지 얘기를 나눈 뒤에 밖에좀 나가자고 해서 갔더니, 빨간색 렉서스 ES 350이 리본이 달려 있는 것이었다!

This is the best Christmas gift that I’ve ever had in my entire life!  I am so thankful and tearful!  Thanks to the Lord, and to my pastor as well as my church family.

내 평생 받아본 것 중에 가장 최고의 선물이다!  너무 감사하고 기뻐서 눈물이 난다.  주님께 감사하고, 목사님께 감사하고, 모든 교회 식구들에게 감사한다.

I’ve been driving my car for long time, and three years ago, the heater stopped working.  I wanted to fix it, but I was told that it would cost $800 at a garage.  I googled and did some research about it and found that it would cost $800 to $1,000 to fix it because the problem is the heat core which is on the innermost part of the car.

내 차를 꽤 오래 탔는데, 약 3년 전에 히터가 고장이 났다.  고치려고 했는데, 정비소에서 800불이 든다고 한다.  구글 검색하고 좀 찾아보니 인터넷에서도 800불에서 천불 사이로 수리비용이 나온다고 한다.  이는 문제가 히트 코어라고 하는 부분에서 발생했기 때문인데, 차에서 가장 안쪽에 들어있는 부품이다.

I badly wanted to fix it — I am in Chicago area.  But my car is old and rusty and thought it would not be wise to spend that much money on this car which I bought long time ago with just three grand.  Then I decided to buy my wife a good jacket because she cannot bear the cold even a bit.  So we bought a Canada Goose which costed almost the same.

난 정말 정말 고치고 싶었다.  시카고 지역에 살기 때문이다 (시카고 지역은 꽤 춥다).  하지만 낡고 녹슨 차에 그 많은 돈을 들이는 게 현명하다고 생각되지 않았다.  내 차는 한참 전에 샀는데, 3천불 정도만 주고 산 것이다.  아내는 조그만 추위도 못 견디는데, 그래서 차라리 아내에게 좋은 코트를 사주자고 생각했고, 거의 같은 가격의 캐나다 구스를 사줬다.

Thankfully she was warm in the coat, but we were still freezing in the car for three winters in Chicago.  And recently some of the people in my church found that out, and they told the pastors (we have two senior co-pastors).  Then the pastors asked people if anyone would be willing to donate any car with heater.  And the result was Lexus ES 350!

감사하게도 아내는 그 코트를 입고 따뜻하게 지낼 수 있었지만, 우리는 시카고 지역에서 세 번의 겨울을 덜덜 떨며 얼어붙는 차 안에서 지내야 했다.  그런데 최근에 교인 몇몇이 그걸 알게 되었고, 이를 목사님에게 (우리 교회는 담임 목사님이 두분이다) 알렸다.  목사님이 수소문을 해서 혹시 히터가 나오는 아무 차라도 기증할 사람이 있는지 알아봤고, 교인이 렉서스 ES 350을 기증했다.

It has almost full option with luxury and shining things, and the mileage is quite low.  The overall condition is really good.

거의 완전 풀 옵션에다가 꽤 고급이고 반짝반짝 빛난다.  마일리지도 꽤 낮은 편이고, 전반적 상태가 완전 좋다.

Wow!  I don’t know what to say.  Lexus is very high end brand and I have never imagine myself buying or driving one, even for used one.  THIS IS THE BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT EVER!

와!  뭐라고 말을 해야 할지 모르겠다.  렉서스는 꽤 비싼 고급 브랜드로 단 한 번도 렉서스를 사거나 몰 생각을 해 보지도 못했다.  심지어 중고도 말이다.  역대 최고의 성탄절 선물임이 틀림없다!

 

Honked first time in 20 months

I honked today for the first time in 20 months.  It was almost two years again when I honked last time.  A lady cut in front of me and I honked at her.  Then she raised her shoulders that she had no idea why I honked.

오늘 20개월만에 처음으로 경적을 울렸다.  마지막으로 빵빵 했던 게 거의 2년 전이다.  한 여성분이 내 앞에서 껴들었고, 내가 빵빵 울렸다.  그러자 그 여성분이 내가 왜 그러는지 모르겠다는 듯이 어깨를 으쓱해 보인다.

Well she had one reason to cut in.  The truck before her was slower than she expected.

그 여성분은 껴들 이유가 하나 있었다.  앞에 있던 트럭이 생각보다 느리게 움직였던 것이다.

But she had couple reasons not to cut in.  First, it was a quite a curve, so she had to steer much more than usual which made her car movement very jerky.  Second, the line was solid which means no lane change.  Third, it was too close that I had to break so hard to avoid the collision.  And one more.  She didn’t give any signal!  She just suddenly cut in.

하지만 껴들면 안되는 이유는 몇가지 있었다.  먼저, 상당히 커브길이어서 차선을 바꾸기 위해 핸들을 평상시보다 훨씬 더 많이 꺽어야 했는데, 결국 차가 뒤뚱거렸다.  둘째, 차선이 끊어지지 않은 실선이었는데, 그 것은 차선을 변경할 수 없다는 뜻이다.  마지막으로 너무 가까웠다.  부딪히지 않기 위해서 급제동을 해야만 했다.  아 그리고 또 하나.  깜빡이 신호 전혀없이 갑자기 확 껴들었다.

Cutting in and lane change are OK.  Those are parts of normal and everyday driving.  But you must do that with safety.

껴드는 것이나 차선 변경 자체는 괜찮다.  날마다 하는 정상적인 운전의 일부니까.  하지만 좀 안전하게 해야지.

First Nations

White supremacists or racists hate all kinds of ethnic groups beside Caucasians.  They say to African Americans to go back to Africa.  They say to Latinos to go back to Mexico blaming they are rapists (they do not care Latinos are not all Mexicans).  They want to build a wall on US-Mexico border.  They also say to Asian Americans to go back home.

백인 우월주의자 또는 인종차별주의자들은 백인이 아닌 모든 종류의 인종을 다 싫어한다.  흑인들에게는 아프리카로 돌아가라고 하고, 남미 사람들에게는 강간범이라고 욕하면서 멕시코로 돌아가라고 한다 (남미 사람들이 다 멕시코 사람이 아닌 건 신경 안쓴다).  그리고 미국-멕시코 국경에 장벽을 세우고 싶어한다.  또한 동양 사람들에게도 고향으로 돌아가라고 외친다.

So, among many ethnic groups, which one do you think they hate the most?  I think the answer is Native Americans.  Because they are the only group who are entitled to say to those White racists to go back.  So, if they do not exists, no one can tell them to go back home in Europe.

그런데, 그 많은 인종들 가운데, 백인들이 가장 싫어하고 증오하는 그룹은 뭘까?  내 생각엔 미국 원주민이다.  오직 원주민들만이 백인들에게 니네 고향으로 돌아가라고 말할 자격이 있으니까.  얘네들만 없으면 그 누구도 백인들에게 유럽으로 돌아가라고 말할 수 있는 족속이 전혀 없다.

I think it is kind of true.  Native Americans are killed more than any other races in America by the police.  Even more than African Americans.  But the media does not say about it at all, literally AT ALL.  For Black people, we can at least hear it at the TV news and daily papers.  But I’ve never heard about Native Americans, ever.

내 생각엔 이게 사실인 듯하다.   원주민은 경찰에의해  미국에서 죽는 사람들 중 가장 많은 수를 차지한다.  심지어는 흑인들 보다도 더 많이 살해당한다.  그런데 미디어에서 전혀, 말 그대로 전.혀. 다루질 않는다.  흑인들은 최소한 테레비 뉴스나 신문에서 보도라도 조금 되는데, 원주민은 그런거 전.혀.없.다.

Even now, many Native Americans are fighting/protesting for their sacred ancestral burial ground at Standing Rock Reservation (it is on North and South Dakotas).  The police are killing them, and water piping them in freezing November and December weather.  Many people are being hurt.  But the media does not say anything about it, not even one second.  I am not talking about conservative media but ANY media including so-called liberal ones.  Because they are all so white.  Liberals are also WHITE liberals.

심지어 지금도, 많은 원주민들이 스탠딩 롹 거주지에서 (노스와 사우스 다코타에 걸쳐있다) 신성한 조상들의 매장지를 지키기 위해 싸우고 있다.  경찰들이 죽이기도 하고, 11월과 12월의 얼어붙는 기온에서 사람들에게 소방차로 물을 쏟아붓고 있다.  수많은 사람들이 날마다 다치고 해를 입고 있는데, 미디어에서는 단 한번도 보여준 적이 없다.  단 일초도 언급조차 한 적이 없다.  내가 말하는 미디어는 보수 미디어를말 하는게 아니라 모든 미디어를 다 말하는 것이다.  진보 언로도 포함해서 말이다.  왜냐하면, 보수던 진보던 어째든 다 백인들이니까.  진보도 결국은 그냥 백인을 위한 진보일 뿐이다.
