Super Store

Superstore is the TV show on NBC.  It depicts Walmart and it is very funny.  I became interested first because of its name – Superstore.  Real Canadian Superstore was my favourite store when I lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Among the employees in the Cloud 9 store, it shows three major races–Caucasians, Latinos, and Asians.

There is no problem of Caucasians and Latinos (actually Latinas).  The main character is Latina and one of the episode, she was fighting against the prejudice and profile of Latino.  The problem is how they show the Asians.  Maybe it is because I am a Asian.

There are three Asian characters.  Two Asian women are very dumb and stupid while they are (sexually) sluts.  One Asian man, a Filipino, is not dumb but is sly, a gay, and also an undocumented immigrant.  Well, being a gay is OK to me but it is not to show LGBT are equal human, but they just wanted to make fun of Asians and LGBT people.  If you disagree, that is OK.  I am just writing about the impressions I’ve got.

It is also interesting that they depict the Asian as a illegal immigrant.  Of course, there are many illegal immigrants from Asia, but the number is not to be compared to those of Latinos.  According to the statistics (of US government), 74% of all undocumented immigrants are from Latin America while only 10% are from Asia.

Most of the episodes of Superstore make me very uncomfortable through the way how they depict Asians.

University of Chicago

We walked around  the University of Chicago campus.  Unlike yesterday, it was quite windy, cloudy and cold.  The campus would have been so beautiful with shining sun, but it was a bit gloomy.

This is the University of Chicago Library.  It’s design is quite unique.

2.UC Gate.JPG

This is the gate to the main campus at the opposite side of the library.

3.Oriental Museum4.JPG

After we walked around the campus, we went to the Oriental Institute Museum at 10 sharp, the time they open the museum.  And we saw a lot of interesting and amazing things there.  This oriental institute Museum is amazing and free.  So it is the MUST-GO in Chicago.

4.Garbage Pizza1.JPG

After that, we went to Medici to have Garbage Pizza.  I like it, but not other people with me.  My mother was quite upset that the pizza was too salty.  Well, we’ll try another pizza next time at another place.

5.Woodfield Shopping Mall2.JPG

Our original plan for today was going to a zoo in the afternoon, but I thought it would be too cold and that would not be a good idea.  So I changed it and we went to the Woodfield Shopping Mall, which is the biggest shopping mall in Chicago area.  We did not buy any but we saw a lot of stores and goods.

6.Walmart1.JPG

We came back home and ate the dinner.  And we went to Walmart to buy some groceries and other stuff.  My mother loves to push the shopping cart.  Aunt did not come with us to the Walmart.  We had interesting conversation in the car on the way back.

Walmarts in Canada and America

Walmarts in Canada and America are very similar which is of course because they are one company. But there are still some differences between them.

In Canada, Walmarts have McDonalds as in-store restaurant in them while they have Subway in America.

In Canada, Walmarts have Western Union as banking service in them while they have Moneygram in America.

In Canada, Walmarts use MasterCard as their membership (credit) card while they have their own Discover credit card in America.

And maybe a few more.

US North East Trip – Maine

Our next destination was Portland, Maine. Maine is the state which is at the north end (and also east end) of America. It borders two Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick. In many ways, Maine looks like Canada, which means it is so beautiful. Even I saw many of the manhole has marked “CANADA.”

Yummy Oysters

The very first thing we did was to find a restaurant and eat. Hannah liked the restaurant, but I did not. Oysters were good and fresh. She had lobster sandwich, and I had fish and chips.

Hannah’s lobster sandwich

Hers was fine, but mine was kind of horrible. It was supposed to be ‘fish and chips,’ but it was all chips (french fries) with a few fish bites.

This cannot be a fish and chips!

Anyway, I did not like my dish at all. But we went to the Head Light (lighthouse) in Portland which has so beautiful scene. It was amazing and it could be one of the most beautiful places in America (which is common in Canada).

Head Light in Portland, Maine

We saw a sign saying Henry Longfellow came to this lighthouse often to get some inspiration for his poem. I also sat at the same rock to get the same inspiration but in vain. But the beauty of the scene around make me so feel like to write a poem and sing its beauty.

Almost everything in Maine was beautiful, from  the winding roads to the shores and beaches. If I have to choose another place to live in America, I may choose Maine, and Hannah will definitely choose New York City for sure.

One curious thing in Maine I found is that the pavement there was glittering everywhere in Maine. I don’t know why. Can anyone tell me about it?

At the last day we left Maine, we went to Walmart in Auburn, Maine to get some bottled water, and we found a wonderful deal for meal whose name was PICK3. So, we pick three items and they put them in a huge box for just $10. Hannah and I ate that until evening!

Another good thing in Maine was that they have free parking even in downtown. Well, even though Portland is the largest city in Maine, in the aspect of size and population, it is nothing but a suburban city in other states.

One unpleasant thing in Maine was that the drivers are intolerable. I actually don’t understand this. Usually metropolitan drivers like in NYC or Chicago drives crazy, but suburban drivers are usually less crazy. But the Portland drivers are so much crazy even they live in suburban size city. For example, if I don’t start moving in 0.5 second after the green signal came, they honk crazy from the back. This, I’ve never experienced in NYC nor Chicago.

Second Day of 2009 Summer Trip

After the nap, I continued on driving and around 7am, I got to Saskatoon, the biggest town in Saskatchewan. But I just fueled up and left right away. Because nothing in the town interested me and I did not have enough time for this travel. The first impression was just that it was bigger than that I expected.

I confess now one thing. Before the town, I drowsed for a while and had no idea that I went over the centre line and driving in wrong way. Then I heard a honking sounds and opened my eyes, there was a car honking and flashing headlights, but I still had no idea what was going on.

But thank God, the car also crossed the centre line and passed me in wrong way, then he came back to his own lane. Then I realised what happened and I also came back to my lane where I was supposed to drive.

Praise the Lord for His protection.

But when I filled the car at CO-OP, they refused to give me membership points. They said the co-op membership is city-wise which means they are not going to give points to anyone from outside the city. What the hell is that!

Around quarter to nine, I got to North Battleford, SK and had breakfast there. I boiled the water at the parking lot using the electric kettle for cup-ramen.

Around noon, I got to Lloydminster which is the border city of Saskatchewan and Alberta. When I heard about this city first time, someone told me that the city has two time zones because the two provinces have different time zones. I have no idea it used to, but for now, the Saskatchewan side of the city also uses Alberta time zone. The funny thing is that  the people living east of the border pay tax to Saskatchewan government, and those in west to Alberta.

I arrived at Edmonton, the first destination of this travel around 4:30pm. I heard so many good and great things about the West Edmonton Mall. I could not wait even one more seconds to see it!

But it just made me disappointed. I should have skipped Edmonton and its big mall. It’s just big, not fancy. There was almost no difference from Polo Park where I live except its stupid huge size.

And I made the reservation of the Motel by the phone in the Leduc, which is in South of Edmonton. I drove down there about 30 minutes. And when I got there, they said, they cannot take us in because there was all blacked-out, and the computer did not work. Oh, stupid!

You know, I was so tired and sleepy.

We went back to Edmonton for Walmart to buy an inverter which changes car-power into house-power. I was driving looking for a Walmart, but I could not find. While I was driving on the highway, my friend’s son said, “There’s Walmart!” I checked to him, and he said not sure. I asked again, was there or not because the highway exit was coming in right front of me, and I had to decide to exit or keep on highway.

“WHY!!!!,” then the mother screamed and shouted, “do you shout to my precious son!!!!” I was extremely astonished. First, because she was really  really loud, and second, she was extremely upset and mad. But I was not shouting, even I did not raise my voice.

“If there is no Walmart, that does not mean we’re gonna die! We can just make turn and come out again! Then WHY WHY WHY do you shout to my son!!!!”

Oh my God.. This is nothing but the perfect and fantastic pair of idiot son and crazy mom.

Anyway, we went back to the big mall, and at the parking lot, she let her boy go out and ask for the direction. The boy came back and said, “right and right.” So I drove just as the boy told me. But I could not find one. I circled three times but still there was no Walmart.

Then I went back to the parking lot again, and I got off and asked. The direction was actually left and left. The young boy of grade four studied English very much in Korea, and he studied about half year in down the USA, and also was studying in Canada for a year. Still he could not listen or understand that simple words.

And I left Edmonton after 11pm. While I was driving on highway 16, I wanted to find a Motel as soon as possible because I did not sleep right for two days. And it was not easy to find one. Just before Entwistle (I did not know the name), I also pulled over again by the police. But I had no idea why because I was not overspeeding. The officer came and asked me whether I was drugged. I said no. He asked me again about alcoholic drinks. “No, why?” I answered.

He said I was too slow driving 80km/h on 110km/h road. I explained that I was trying to read the signs to find a motel. Then he explained how to get the nearest one. He also was so kind. And that was the second time I was pulled over by the police officer in my entire life. Twice in two days. Once too fast, the other too slow.

And I went the motel and got a room. The motel owner told me that he heard the news saying there is severe thunder storm in Calgary, and a boy died camping around Calgary. I thanked God for His giving me nice weather on my way.

That was another day.
