What is a good sermon?

How many preachers and pastors are in this world? And how many sermons they make? There are spoken, written, and online sermons covering the earth each week.

All that numerous sermons are good? I don’t think so. Just as there are foods good for health and bad, I believe there are good sermons and bad ones too.

Then, what is good sermon or what are the conditions for good sermon?

I think good sermon must be based on the Bible, and teaching the true essence of the Bible.

These days, I found many sermons are saying about stories and people which is not in Bible. Lincoln and Carnegie are not in Bible. And pastors says to be blessed with materials.  But the essence of the Bible is to get heaven and eternal life for poeple through their own cross.

In this aspect, I think my pastor’s sermon is the world best. He says based on the Bible, about the essence of the Bible.

I can’t be rich

I think I can’t be rich. I read many times that ‘to be rich, cut off your spends – spend just only which is really necessary’.

But I am the one who likes to give. Sometimes I just buy snacks and drinks for my team.

One of my colleague who is next to me, I think she will be great rich. She loves to take and hates to give. She never buy anything for anyone.

Last Friday, she bought a bundle of toothpaste for it is cheaper than to buy one toothpaste. She took one for her and sold others in higher price. To say the actual price, it was cheaper than to buy one in the market and higher than the one in the bundle. She took 20 cents for each paste.

Her voice was very loud when she sold them. She should work at a shop, not at office.

In the same case, I just gave or sold them in lower price. So, I cannot be rich. And she will be rich.

Asteroid number 134340

Pluto, which was once a member of solar family, is stripped of his planethood. Minor Planet Centre deprived him of its name and numbered it as 134340.

His three satellites, Charon, Nix, and Hydra is now called 134340 I, II, and III respectively.

This news reminds me of Danjong, one of the kings in Chosun dynasty. Danjong is interpreted as ‘Short king’. He became king in his very early days. His uncle rebelled, and deprived him of kingship. This is one of the very sad history in Korea.

I think pluto and Danjong are similar each other. And I am unhappy for that. Unfortunate king of Danjong, and unhappy planet of pluto.

Human smells bad

I live in Shilim in Seoul. I go to Shilim subway station every morning and night to go to work and home.

The Shilim cross way is very busy street – so many people with various shops and restaurants. There are so many clubs and bars. I go to Shilim crossway almost around 6:30 am, and I see many people going home, in other words, they drank over night until 6:30 am.

At 6:30 am in Shilim crossway, half of the people are going to work, and the other half are going work. Back of the streets are full of motels.

People drink, eat, and vomit on the street. People talk, hug, kiss, and part of them go to motel to have sex.

When I get to Shilim crossway in the morning, I smell it bad. The Shilim streets smell bad. It is disgusting. But the smell is not of the streets’ own. People made the streets smell bad. It is the smell of human.

Human smells bad. The earth is full of people. The earth smells bad. And human smells worse.

Distinction hurts others

Distinction always hurts others or at least makes others feel bad.
My family had never been rich since my birth. I heard that my grandfather was great rich when my father was young, not not my time. And when I was freshman and junior in high school, I was not in top class. I was not the student that teachers like. Teachers love the student in top class and the son of the rich and the power.

That was english class of summer school in the second year of high school. My father did rice shop, and I had to deliver them to the customer’s house by bicycle all day and all night until midnight. I worked the day before of course. I was very tired. And there was a boy who was in top class whose father was rich in my class.

That rich boy slept in that english class lying down on the desk. The teacher saw that and said in lower voice “someone’s sleeping”. After about five minutes, I dozed a little because I was too tired, and the lesson was boring. The teacher saw me also and said in his very angry voice “You, come out to me, son of bitch”.

And in front of the blackboard, I was beaten like a dog for about thirty minutes.

I was very sad as much as I cannot describe not because I was beaten bitterly but because I was distinguished. Teacher’s beating his student was normal at that time of 1992 in Korea.

Distinction is bad.

My second episode occurred last week.

My office works five days a week. To work saturday and sunday, and to get paid for them, one need to get signed for by CTO.

I worked the saturday before last week for emergency work and I applied the paper for weekend work. I worked 7 am to 11 pm – 16 hours work. And one of my colleague worked also.  His work was not emergency and even necessary.

And I found that CTO signed for him and rejected my paper.  I was not hurt for I am a grown-up. But I felt bitterly bad.

Distinction is bad.

When you distinguish someone, you might do not know and your feeling might not be so bad. But when you are distinguished, you must know it. You must feel and taste bitterness much.

Give and take in church

I know a missionary in a church who does great missions all over the world. But she says “Give and take” all the time, and she loves more who give many presents and gifts to her. Likewise, she despises who does not give her much. Yes, that is the life is, and that is the world is.

But the church must not follow the world because the world goes into hell. The whole world goes into wide gate, but the church must go into narrow gate just as it is written in Matthew 7:13. ‘Give and take’? No, never. The bible says “Freely ye have received, freely give(Matthew 10:8, King James Version).

Just as I wrote before, Jesus does not want the politics be played in church. In spite, He is against the politics. The gospel of Luke tells us, “But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just(Luke 14:13-14, King James Version). Yes, surely Jesus is against the politics. In political aspect, one must give someone only when he finds something to get from him direct or indirect. But Jesus told us give someone who has nothing to pay us back, which is interpreted as “Do not play politics in church“.

I strongly believe that “Give and take” is the word which Jesus hates most. If anyone wants to be a servant of Jesus, one must say “Freely give and take nothing back“.

What makes me sad is that the church people show much hospitality to the rich and power while they don’t care about the poor and powerless. That hospitality is not love but politics which Jesus hates most. People despise the poor, and the church also despise the poor.

My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? (James 2:1-6, King James Version)

The bible has commanded us what to do and how to do. But the churches which proclaims itself the disciples of Christ Jesus are against the bible and Jesus. Remember what Jesus said in the last section of Matthew 25. What you do to the poor is what you do to Jesus, and what you don’t to the poor is what you don’t to Jesus.

I am against the politics in church because I am for Jesus Christ, my Saviour.

Politics in church

Politics is one of what I do not like. Politics comes out of human desire – The desire to get more, the desire to go higher. And politics comes out of human fear – The fear that one could lost what he has. One could lost his wealthy or status.

Just because desire and fear are the nature of man, where there are men over two, there is politics.

Think about Jesus and politics. Even though Jesus did not say that He hates politics, we know at least Jesus did not come to play politics.

People tried to make Jesus king over them, but Jesus fled. Jesus came to be the one and only King of kings over all the universe. But He is spiritual King. He did not want to be a political king. He came to free His people. But that was not in aspect of politics. He has freed His people from sin and death, the death of spirit and soul.

Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s (Matthew 22:21, King James Version)

This verse has at least two different meaning:

One is that the believers must do the duties for both God and the earthly authorities.

The other, which I want to say now, is that Jesus split politics and religion.

The disciples of Jesus tried to play politics – each of them wanted to be higher than other disciples. As a result, they argued and at last they went to Jesus and asked of Him in Matthew 18, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven”.

Jesus commanded to be humble and to become like a little child, in other words, “Do not play politics“.

See the churches which claim themselves as the disciples of Jesus. There are politics between and among the churches. There are politics within the church.

A church is full of politics. Church members struggle and play politics. It is disgusting. They are all disgusting. The bible teaches to sacrifice oneself for others but all the children of the church sacrifices others for themselves.

To go into the heaven, to be a citizen of heaven, to be a real disciple of Christ Jesus, one must be humble, sacrifice himself, and STOP playing politics right now. The sooner, the better.
