This day, Mr. Bill had another thing – he was supposed to volunteer to a golf club in Banff area. And the travellers wanted to take warm bath at Banff Hot Springs. So he gave us a ride to the springs and he gave us a word to come and pick us up a few hours later.

이날은 빌 아저씨가 다른 일정이 있었다. 밴프 지역의 어느 골프장에 자원봉사하러 가는 거였다. 우리 여행객들은 밴프 온천에 한 번 가보고 싶었다. 그래서 빌 아저씨가 우리를 온천에 데려다 주고, 몇시간 후에 데리러 오겠다고 했다.

And when I went into the hot springs, I was so much disappointed. It was even smaller and worse than any small public bath house in Korea. So we decided not to pay and go in.

내가 밴프 온천에 가서 보니 완전 실망이었다. 한국의 어느 조그만 동네 목욕탕보다 더 작고 형편없었다. 그래서 여긴 안가고 스킵하기로 했다.

So we took a bus to downtown Banff.

그래서 버스를 타고 밴프 다운타운으로 갔다.

Banff town was quite beautiful place where you can see the great Rockies at your hotel or any streets.

밴프 타운은 꽤 아름다운 곳이었다. 자신이 머무는 호텔이나 어느 길에서나 록키 산을 볼 수 있었다.

It was quite much tourists’ town rather than residential place. And I met some people from Utah on a motor cycle.

밴프는 거주지라기 보다는 완전 관광지였다. 미국 유타주에서 오토바이 타고 온 사람들도 만났다.

Then Mr. Bill came and picked us up to Canmore. And we walked about 7 or 10km along the town of Canmore. It was nice hiking course, and Mr. Bill told us that he walks everyday about 12km – preparing himself for the winter ski.

그 후에 빌 아저씨가 와서 우릴 태우고 캔모어로 돌아갔다. 거기서 약 7-10km정도 산책을 했다. 꽤 괜찮은 산책 코스였다. 빌 아저씨는 겨울에 스키 탈 것을 대비하기 위해서 날마다 12km정도 걷는다고 한다.

And there was an old house of North West Mounted Police, which is the former body of RCMP.

캔모어에는 NWMP라고 있었는데 (북서부 기마 경찰), 현재 캐나다의 연방 경찰인 RCMP (왕립 캐나다 기마 경찰)의 전신이다.

There was so many ducks and geese and other animals. I also saw some of the elks in the right down town of Canmore!

그리고 많은 오리와 거위를 비롯한 동물들이 있었다. 심지어는 캔모어 다운타운에서 엘크들도 봤다.

We also walked along the railway for a bit, and I was told that two or three months ago, a young girl around early twenties was hit by a train to death. We was listening to an iPod and was walking on the railway track. She was not able to hear the train honking.

Drink and Driver is bad but also Listening and Walking on the TRACK is dangerous too. Please DON’T do that! That is crazy and suicide.

또한 기차길 따라서도 조금 걸었는데, 듣기로는 두세달 전에 20대 초반의 여자가 기차에 치여 죽었다고 한다. 아이팟을 듣고 있었고 철길 위를 걷고 있었다고 한다. 기차의 경적을 듣지 못했다고 한다.

술먹고 운전하는 것도 나쁘지만 음악을 들으면서 철길 위를 걷는 것도 위험하다. 그러니 제발 그러지좀 말길. 이건 미친 짓이고 자살 행위다.

One strange thing was that there were so many rabbits in town. I asked about it and Mr. Bill explained to me:

한가지 눈에 띄는 것은 토끼가 너무 많다는 것이었다. 이에 대해 물어보니 대답을 해 줬는데:

Five or six years ago, there was no rabbits in town. But a family had rabbits as pets, then they were just fed up with them. And they just threw away out of the house, knowing what to do.

5-6년 전엔 마을에 토끼가 없었다고 한다. 그런데 어떤 가정이 애완동물로 키우다  실증이 나자 어찌할 바를 모르고 그냥  밖에 버렸다고 한다.

Then the rabbits mated themselves and the number of them explosively increased. Now the town is full of rabbits. But at nights, cougars come down to the town and eat them.

토끼들은 스스로 짝짓기를 하고는 숫자가 폭발적으로 늘었다. 이제 마을은 토끼로 가득하게 되었다. 하지만 밤에는 쿠거들이 내려와서 토끼를 먹는다고 한다.

Our original plan  was to leave Canmore for Vancouver at night. But Mr. Bill persuaded me not to do for it is dangerous at night. So we stayed one more night at Canmore.

원래 계획은 밤에 캔모어를 떠나 밴쿠버로 출발하는 것이었는데, 빌 아저씨가 위험하다고 하지 말라고 말려서 캔모어에서 하루 밤 더 묵었다.

My bathroom sink was quite slow and I could see the hairs and other things stuck down the hole.

And I bought the Drano Max Gel (900ml) at Walmart.

I poured half bottle of it slowly, and waited 20 minutes, then flushed it with hot water.

Now the sink is quite fast. I am satisfied.

화장실 세면대가 머리카락이랑 몇가지 오물로 막혀서 물이 꽤 느리게 내려갔다.

그래서 월마트 가서 Drano Max Gel이라고 트래펑 비슷한 걸 샀다.

설명에 써 있는 대로 반병을 천천히 붓고 20분을 기다린 후에 뜨거운 물로 씻어 내렸다.

이제는 물이 꽤 빨리 빠진다. 성능은 만족스럽다.

Several Months ago, I got a notice from my care taker that my rental fee would be increased to $711 from November. I was paying $677 each month, so it is $34. I just thought, Wow… OK.

Then I got a letter from the government of Manitoba – Department of Finance, Residential Tenancies Branch, August 27th. The letter said that the increase was too much, so the government adjusted it to $702.

Yes! I got $9 discount thanks to the government.

And I forgot it.

Then, on October 14th, I got another letter from the same government branch.

The letter said that my apartment company appealed to the government about the discount of my rent. Then the government dug deeper about it. The letter has many many numbers, formulas, and the statements from the law and acts. Then the letter has a “FINAL ORDER” saying my payment should go even down to $700!

So, I am paying $700 instead of $711.

And my apartment has two bed rooms (one big, one small), a living room, a kitchen and dining room, a bathroom, a storage, a cloth place. And my rental fee also covers heat and water.

여러달 전에 아파트 관리인에게서 공지를 하나 받았는데, 내 아파트 렌트비가 11월부터 711불로 올라간다는 것이었다. 내가 677불을 내고 있었으니 34불이 올라가는 셈이다. 뭐 그냥 어이쿠.. 이런 이라고만 생각을 했다.

그 후에 마니토바 주정부에서 8월 27일 편지를 받았는데, 재정부의 거주민 부서였다. 그 편지에는 내 렌트비 증가폭이 너무 커서 702불로 조정을 했다는 내용이었다.

그리고는 잊어버리고 있었다.

그 후에 10월 14일 또 다시 같은 정부 부서에서 편지를 받았다.

그 편지 내용을 보니 내 아파트 회사가 내 렌트비 증가 할인에 대해서 정부에 항소를 했고, 정부가 상세히 조사를 했다고 한다. 그 내용엔 여러 숫자들과 공식들 그리고 법령들이 어지럽게 써 있었다. 그리고 그 편지엔 “최종 명령”이 들어 있었는데, 내 렌트비는 오히려 700불로 또 내려갔다!

그래서 현재 711불이 아니라 700불을 내고 있다.

참고로 내 아파트는 방이 두 개(하나는 크고 하나는 작다), 거실 하나, 주방 겸 다이닝 룸이 하나, 화장실 하나, 창고 하나, 옷 보관소 하나 그렇게 있고 렌트비에 난방과 물은 포함되어 있다.

October 23 was SAG day in Manitoba which stands for Special Area Group. On SAG day, all schools from kindergarten to grade 12 are day off and the teachers have conference. So my church had a day long programme for the parents.

Anyway, at lunch time, we ate hot dogs and then we had desserts.

Rev. Bush announced, “Age under 7 come first.”

Then a boy age 9 asked, “I am three in heart! Can I come now?”

Of course, rejected.

10월 23일은 마니토바 주의 SAG 데이였다. 이 날은 마니토바의 모든 학교가, 유치원부터 12학년(고3)까지 쉬는 날이고, 선생님들이 모여서 컨퍼런스를 한다. 그래서 우리 교회에서 부모님들을 위해 그날 하루 낮 프로그램을 운영했다.

어째든, 점심 시간에 핫도그를 먹고 나서 디저트를 먹었는데 목사님이 이렇게 선언했다.

“7살 이하 어린이 먼저 나오세요”

그러자 9살 먹은 한 남자애가 말하길

“전 마음은 세살인데 나와도 되나요?”라고 물었다.

당연히 안됐다.

On the seventh day of my trip, I stayed in Canmore and Mr. Bill took me several places in Banff. The first place was Johnston Canyon. It has very nice trail.

일곱째 날엔 캔모어에 머물렀고, 빌 아저씨가 밴프의 여러 지역에 데려다 줬다. 제일 먼저 간 곳은 죤스턴 캐년으로 등산로가 참 좋았다.

And there was a growing rock. Mr. Bill told me that the rock is  growing and coming forward little by little.

At the end of the trail, we got ink pots. Ink Pots are the six cool springs whose water colour is so beautiful. It just looks like ink. And I could see the bubbling and the water coming up from the ground. Mr. Bill told me that the colour of the water is because of the glacier sediments.

등산로 끝에는 물감통이라는 곳이 있는데, 물감통은 여섯개의 시원한 물이 나오는 샘으로 물 색이 참 아름답다. 마치 물감을 풀어 놓은 것 같은 색이다. 바닥에서부터 공기방울하고 물이 올라오는 걸 볼 수 있었다. 빌 아저씨가 물의 색이 저런 이유는 빙하 침전물 때문이라고 했다.

We left the Johnston Canyon for famous three lakes. On the way, we were able to see a herd of elks sleeping in a field. And there was only one which was not sleeping but watching. That was the leader of  the group which only has the right to have sex with all the female elks. Yes, that is real Noblesse Oblige!

죤스턴 캐년을 떠나 유명한 세 호수가 있는 곳으로 가는데, 가는 도중에 들판에서 한 무리의 엘크가 잠자는 걸 목격했다. 그런데 그 중에 딱 한 마리만 잠을 자지 않고 보초를 서고 있었다. 바로 무리의 우두머리로 무리 내의 모든 암컷과 섹스를 할 수 있는 권리를 유일하게 갖고 있다고 했다. 그래, 이거야 말로 노블리제 오블리제가 아닌가! ^^

The next day morning, we got up to find our old host preparing the sandwiches for lunch. By his car we looked around the town of Canmore. It was little and nice town. It was originally mine town but for now all mines were closed and it is much more touring and resorting town.

다음날  아침에 일어나니 집주인 할아버지가 점심으로 샌드위치를 만들고 계셨다. 그 분 차를 타고 캔모어 타운을 구경했는데, 조그마하고 예쁜 곳이었다. 원래는 탄광 마을이었다고 하는데 이제는 모든 탄광이 폐쇄되었고 지금은 관광도시로 이름을 갖고 있다.

Then we headed for Grassi Trail. The trail was named after Lawrence Grassi, the Italian Canadian who worked for Canadian Pacific Railway as a coal miner. The sign says he loved mountain and Canmore.

그 다음엔 그라씨 등산로로 갔는데, 이 길은 로렌스 그라씨가 만들었다고 한다. 그는 이탈리아에서 캐나다로 온 사람으로 캐나디언 퍼시픽 철도회사에서 석탄광 채굴자로 일을 했다고 한다. 안내를 보니 산과 캔모어를 사랑했다고 써 있다.

I faced several times with these kind of signs showing two different levels of ways. I chose “more difficult” all the time.

등산하면서 난이도가 다른 두 개의 길을 알려주는 표지판을 여러번 만났는데 난 늘 더 어려운 걸 택했다.

We found some people cliff climbing. She looked so brave. 암벽등반 하는 사람들을 발견했는데 꽤 용감해 보였다.

And this is Mr. Beaton who gave us rooms to sleep and cooked for us about a week. And he was wonderful guide around Canmore and Banff. There standing an old lady we met on the trail.

그리고 바로 이분이 비튼씨로 잠잘 방을 내어 주시고 일주일 동안 요리도 다 해 주시고, 관광 가이드까지 해 주셨다. 옆에는 등산하면서 만난 할머니가 계신다.

And there were two caves on the cliff, and just by the cave there was a sign saying we have some ancient paintings on the rock wall. It says it was several hundred years old and done by the aboriginals.

그리고 절벽에 동굴이 두 개 정도 있었는데 동굴  근처에는 바위 벽에 오래된 그림이 있다는 안내가 있었다. 수백년 되었다고 하는데, 원주민들이 그린 거라고 한다.

We got up comparative early and we departed around 9 in the morning. That was because we already booked and paid for Ice Walk at the Ice Field which is quite long from our camp ground. Usually they got up 11am. But our actual plan was departing 8am. They are always slow and late. I drove over the speed limit and we got their around 5 minutes after 11am. So we late. We got to the building and asked the reception to phone the guide so that they could wait for us a few more minutes.

평소보다 일찍 일어나서 9시 쯤에 출발했다. 아이스 필드에서 아이스 워크를 예약하고 돈을 냈기 때문에 서둘렀다. 원래는 8시에 출발할 예정이었지만 늘 그렇듯이 늦게 출발하게 되었다. 과속을 했지만 11시 5분쯤에 도착을 했다. 늦었다. 건물에 들어가서 리셉션에 있는 사람들에게 부탁해서 가이드에게 전화해서 기다리게 했다.

We started the Ice Walk and came down around 3pm, so it was about four hour’s walk on the ice. The name of the glacier is Athabasca. The guide told us many things: This glacier is 70,000 years old. The glacier is melting down every year. The height is lowering, the location is also backing. and so on.

빙하 체험을 바로 시작해서 오후 3시쯤에 내려왔으니까 약 4시간 정도 걸었다. 빙하의 이름은 아타바스카라고 한다. 가이드가 여러가지를 얘기해 줬는데 빙하가 약 7만년 되었다는 것, 해마다 빙하가 많이 녹는다는 것, 높이가 낮아지고 뒤로 위치가 후퇴한다는 것 등등이었다.

The man in the photo above was my guide and I forgot his name. He came from Quebec doing this job for 30 years. And this year is his last year to retirement. We had bunch of French people in my group, so the guide spoke in both languages (because he’s from Quebec).

위 사진에 있는 사람이 가이든데 이름을 잊어 버렸다. 퀘벡에서 왔고 가이드 생활을 30년간 해 왔다고 하며 올해가 은퇴하기 전 마지막이라고 한다. 우리 그룹에 프랑스 사람들이 꽤 있었는데, 가이드가 영어랑 불어로 얘기를 했다 (퀘벡은 불어를 쓴다).

I was lucky to have a biologist in my group. I was able to hear many things and explanations from her.

우리 그룹에 생물학자가 있어서 여러가지 설명을 또 곁들어 들을 수 있었다.

I was looking down the crevasse, which is the split crack in the ice. It was quite dangerous, so the guide was holding my hands while I was looking down. And look what I and my guide were wearing in mid August! The temperature there was around 10C below freezing point.

얼음의 갈라진 틈인 크레바스를 내려다 보고 있는데, 꽤 위험하기 때문에 가이드가 내 손을  붙잡아 주고 있었다. 그런데, 나랑 가이드랑 어떤 옷을 입고 있는지 한 번 보길. 저게 바로 8월 중순의 옷 차림이다. 빙하 위의 온도는 영하 10도 정도였다.

There was actually another way to get to the glacier – the bus. If you are willing to pay more, you can get the bus. Look at the wheels of the bus – they are huge!

빙하에 가는 데는 또 다른 방법이 있는데, 바로 버스 타는 것이다. 돈만 더 낸다면 버스를 탈 수 있다. 버스 바퀴가 참 거대하다.

After that, we had quick lunch in the parking lot. After that we just started again to the south. And around 6pm, we got to that famous Lake Louise.

그 뒤에 주차장에서 간단히 점심을 먹고 바로 남쪽으로 출발했다. 약 6시 쯤에 그 유명한 루이스 호수에 도착했다.

Just around the lake, there is a nice forest of Bamboo. I quite enjoyed it.

This Lake Louise was so beautiful. But I could not understand why it is so famous. Looking all the lakes around, they are all same beautiful!

루이스 호수는 참 아름다웠다. 하지만 왜 이게 그렇게 유명한지 이해를 못하겠다. 주변의 다른 호수들을 봐도 모두 동일하게 아름다운데.

After that we headed to Canmore, and we got to Mr. Bill Beaton’s house around 9pm. He prepared a dinner, and I enjoyed the Chicken Pie very much. He is amateur chef and he also won many prizes in the contests.

그  후에 캔모어로 가서 빌 비튼씨 집에 저녁 9시 경에 도착했다. 저녁을  준비해 주셔서 먹었는데 치킨 파이가 꽤 맛있었다. 비튼씨는 아마추어 요리산데, 요리 경연대회에서 상도 여러번 탔다.

So this was another day. 이렇게 또 하루가 갔다.

Go to Codecs & demuxer tab

Choose Audio codec family – “AAC (MPEG2/4 Advanced Audio Coding)”

And if the subtitle is mixed with the video and blurred,

Change Video codec family to “MPEG 1/2 Video decoder libmpeg2-v0.4.0b”

우분투에서 mplayer 또는 gmplayer가 “Frame Sync Error” 메세지를 계속 내보내면서 재생이 잘 안되면 아래와 같이 시도를 하면 된다:

From last week, I could not input Korean or Japanese in skype chatting window. It looked like the SCIM was not working at all. The thing is any other programmes were OK – gnome programmes and KDE/QT programmes. Only skype had this problem among all programmes in my Ubuntu Box.

I did many things and the final one which was the only successful was to add the lines shown below in /etc/profile.

지난 주부터 스카이프 채팅 창에서 한글과 일본어가 써지질 않았다. SCIM 을 입력기로 쓰는데, 전혀 먹히지 않는 것 같았다. 그놈 프로그램이던, KDE/QT 프로그램이던 다른 모든 프로그램은 문제가 없는데 오직 스카이프만 안됐다.

여러가지를 시도한 끝에 마지막 방법, 효과가 있던 유일한 방법은 /etc/profile 에 위의 나온 내용을 추가해 주는 것이었다.

As usual because of my friend’s laziness, we departed the camp ground 11am! And we went to the Information Centre first, and made a reservation for the next day’s Ice Walk. Then we just walked around the town. It was neat, nice and clean town.

오전 11시에 캠핑장을 출발해서 재스터 타운에 있는 관광 안내소로 먼저 갔다. 그 곳에서 아이스 워크 예약 신청을 했다. 그리고는 타운을 걸어서 구경했다. 재스퍼 타운은 깔끔하고 깨끗하고 아름다운 곳이다.

We bought some fruits at a store, and they were so delicious!

과일 가게에서 과일을 좀 샀는데 굉장히 맛있었다.

Then we went into a grocery store and shopped for foods. We bought some beef steaks, and they tasted so good. We barbecued them. People says the Alberta beef tastes better than any other beef. I think they are right.

그 후에 식료품 점에 가서 음식들을 좀 샀는데, 그 중에 소고기 스테이크를 좀 샀다. 저녁에 바베큐 해서 먹었는데 상당히 맛이 좋았다.  사람들이 알버타주의 소고기는 맛이 특히 좋아고 하던데, 정말 그런 거 같다.

After looking around the town and shopping, we hurried to a camp ground. It was Whistler camp ground which is nearest from the town. And we got a spot! We also bought the fire licence. We set up the tent and ate.

타운을 대충 구경하고 살 것을 산 다음에 캠핑장으로 서둘러 갔다. 타운에서 가장 가까운 휘슬러 캠프장에 갔는데, 다행히 자리가 있었다. 그리고 캠프 파이어 허가도 샀다. 텐트를 치고 나서 밥을 먹었다.

I was resting after the meal, and a chipmunk or something like squirrel came to us for foods. And then a squirrel also came and tried to get into the tent.

밥 먹고 쉬고 있었는데 칩멍크 또는 다람쥐 비슷한 게 우리한테 다가왔다. 그리고 좀 후엔 다람쥐가 와서 텐트에 들어가려고 했다.

After the meal, we headed to Maligne Lake. And on the way, we met a black bear cub. Maligne Lake was nice. But because we started this day late, I did not have enough time to see all the lakes and falls around the area.

밥을 먹은 다음에 말린 레이크로 향했는데, 그 길 중간에서 새끼 곰을 만났다. 말린 레이크는 괜찮은 곳이었다. 시간 관계상 주변에 있는 다른 호수나 폭포 등은 보질 못했다.

On the way back, I saw a speed limit sign with an elk warning on top of it. So I thought that it would be great if I could see an elk on the way back because I saw the bear on the way coming.

And I did! I saw many elks on the road and road side.

돌아오는 길에, 속도 표지판 위에 엘크 경고표지판이 있는 걸 봤는데, 속으로 올때는 곰을 봤으니 갈 때는 엘크를 봤으면 좋겠다고 생각했는데, 실제로 봤다!

There was a Korean old lady picturing the elks too much close to them. And I thought it was not good. At that moment, the white-haired old lady in the photo above said quite loudly, “Stupid. They’re wild animals.” And she went on complaining.

Five minutes later, I found the white-haired lady did the same thing, oh no, she did more. In this case, we say that the shitty dog rebukes the dusty dog in Korean saying.

거기에 한 한국인 할머니가 너무 가까이 붙어서 사진을 찍고 있었다. 좀 그렇다고 생각을 하는 찰라, 흰 머리의 다른 할머니가 “야생동물인데, 멍청하긴!”이라고 말하고는 계속 투덜대는 걸 봤다.

약 5분쯤 후에, 그 흰머리 할머니도 똑같은, 아니 더한 짓을 하고 있는 걸 봤다. 이거 완전 뭐 묻은  개가 뭐 묻은 개 나무란다더니.

And I found a Japanese family there and talked to them quite much. They had two cute girls, and I played with them a little bit. It was so good speaking in Japanese for I haven’t spoken quite a long time.

거기서 일본인 식구를 만나서 좀 얘기를 했다. 귀여운 딸이 둘 있길래 같이 좀 놀아줬다. 오랫만에 일본어로 얘기하니 재밌었다.

After that on the way to the camp ground, I stopped at a lake and I do not know the name of it. It also was beautiful. And I saw the North American River Otters. Wow, today is wild animals’ day!

They were fast both in the water and on the land.

그 후에 캠핑장으로 돌아오는 길에 이름모를 호수에 들렀는데, 역시 아름다웠다. 그 곳에서 수달을 봤다. 오늘은 완전 야생동물의 날이로구나~

이 수달은 아시아와 유럽에 있는  수달과 다른 종류라고 한다. 어째든 수달은 Otter. 땅에서든 물 속에서든 빨랐다.

And at the camp, I lit the camp fire and enjoyed it overnight.

캠프장에 돌아와서는 모닥불을 피우고 밤새 놀았다.

Seeing my friend’s posting that he makes yogurt at home with milk, I decided myself to do that.

I put one scoop of yogurt to the milk and waited a day just as he did. But it was not yet done. My friend in Korea can make it in a day, but I in Manitoba should wait one and half or two days.

It is very nice to make it at home for I can have it as much as I want.

집에서 요플레를 만들어 먹는다는 최기영님의 블로그 글을  보고 나도 따라해 보기로 결심했다.

우유에 요플레 한 숟가락을 넣고 했다는 대로 하루를 기다렸는데 안되어 있다. 한국에서는 하루면 되나본데, 여기 마니토바에서는 하루 반이나 이틀을 기다려야 한다.

어째든 집에서 만들어 먹으니 맘껏 먹을 수 있어서 좋다.

We cooked before and after sleep. And we left the motel 2pm. The mom says that her boys do not listen to her and she has no idea whom they took after. But I know – their mom! At the motel or inn, cooking inside the suite is prohibited. But she turned on the burner and cooked. I told her that is forbidden but she again was mad at me saying anything is OK if not found.

여관 방에서 버너에 불을 켜서 요리를 했다. 자기 전에 한 번 하고, 자고 일어나서 또 요리를 해서 먹었다. 그리고 다음 날 오후 2시가 넘어서 출발을 했다.

And on the way, I stopped at a gas station on the highway. There was nothing around from horizon to horizon. And I was a little bit surprised that the gas station was running by Korean family.

도중에 고속도로 주유소에 들렀는데, 지평선부터 지평선까지 주변에 아무 것도 없었는데, 그 주유소가 한국인이 운영하는 것이라서 좀 놀랬다.

After 5pm, I got to the Jasper National Park toll gate. I had to pay about $20 a day. About 20 or 30 minutes pass the toll gate, I stopped at a shoulder and relaxed a little bit at an unknown lake.

5시가 넘어서 재스퍼 국립 공원 톨 게이트에 도착했다. 거기서 하루에 20불 요금을 내야 했다. 약 20-30분 더 가서 갓길에 차를 세우고 이름 모를 호수에서 좀 놀았다.

I saw a wild fire while I was relaxing myself with my feet in the lake.

In Manitoba or any prairie area in North America, the driving is quite boring because the roads are so flat and straight. But here in Rockies, it is much fun. Some of the highway has just 30km/h speed limit.

마니토바나 북미의 평원지대는 어디를 가던 길이 너무 평평하고 곧아서 운전이 지루할 수 밖에없는데… 록키 지역에선 운전이 재밌다. 일부 구간은 고속도로 제한속도가 시속 30km인 곳도 있다.

And we went to Jasper Town but the Information Centre was closed because it was Sunday. And I phoned to make a reservation for a camp ground but found that  the same day reservation is not possible.

Just before the Jasper town, I met another stopper of my travel – the elks.

제스퍼 타운에 들어갔는데 여행자 센터는 주일이라서 문을 닫았다. 캠핑장을 예약하기 위해 전화를 했지만, 당일 예약은 안된다는 응답을 받았다.

재스퍼 타운에 가기 직전에 내 여행의 또 다른 훼방꾼을 만났는데, 바로 엘크였다.

So I went to a nearest camp ground named Whistler and there I got informed that every single camp ground in Jasper area was full except one – overflow camping.

The overflow camp ground was next to Snaring River Camp Ground near the Pocahontas.

그래서  가장 가까운 휘슬러 캠핑 장에 갔는데, 거기서 재스퍼 지역의 모든 캠핑장은 꽉 찼다는 안내를 받았다. 단 하나 남는 곳이 있는데, 오버플로우였다. 일반적인 캠핑장은 나무들로 둘러쌓인 개별적인 공간을 주는데, 오버플로우는 그런 거 없이 벌판에 아무 곳에나 텐트를 치게 하는 곳으로 모든 캠핑장이 꽉 차면 열리는 곳이다.

We stretched the tent on the overflow camping. My friend’s family slept in the tent and I slept in the car. That night we had quite strong wind and rain and also found that our new burner is very good – won over all the string wind and rain.

It is often said that mosquito is the provincial bird of Manitoba. And there are so many mosquitos in Manitoba. I am not going to say how bad and many they are.

Anyway, whenever I found one sucking on me, I smash it right away. But I realised (probably) none of Canadians does that. They just blow it away.

I was curious why. Is it because they spare even mosquitoes as part of the nature? If not, why?

One day seeing me smashing a mosquito on my arm, one of my friend told me not to do that. I of course asked why. He said if I smash one, the body fluids of it or the other’s blood sucked by it would come out on me, and that could spread a disease.

The reason was turned into a pure selfish one – and very reasonable and rational one.

마니토바 주의 새는 모기라고 사람들이 우스개 소리로 하는데, 정말 많다. 얼마나 많은지 얼마나 심한지는 말하지 않겠지만.

어째든, 나는 모기가 내 피를 빠는 걸 보면 바로 쳐 죽이는데, 캐나다 사람들은 그렇지 않고 그냥 바람 불어 날려버리는 걸 발견했다.

그게 참 궁금했다. 모기도 자연의 일부라 아끼는 건가? 아니라면 왜?

하루는 내가 모기를 쳐 죽이는 걸 보고는 친구가 그러지 말라고 했다. 그래서 왜냐고 물었더니, 내가 모기를 쳐 죽이면, 모기의 체액이나 모기가 빨았던 다른 사람의 피가 내게 묻게 되고 그려면 병이 옮을 수도 있다는 것이었다.

쳇 순전히 이기적인 이유였구만. 뭐 합리적이긴 하네.

After the nap, I continued on driving and around 7am, I got to Saskatoon, the biggest town in Saskatchewan. But I just fueled up and left right away. Because nothing in the town interested me and I did not have enough time for this travel. The first impression was just that it was bigger than that I expected.

I confess now one thing. Before the town, I drowsed for a while and had no idea that I went over the centre line and driving in wrong way. Then I heard a honking sounds and opened my eyes, there was a car honking and flashing headlights, but I still had no idea what was going on.

But thank God, the car also crossed the centre line and passed me in wrong way, then he came back to his own lane. Then I realised what happened and I also came back to my lane where I was supposed to drive.

Praise the Lord for His protection.

잠시 잠을 잔 뒤에, 계속 운전을 해서 오전 7시 쯤엔 사스카츄완의 최대 도시인 사스카툰에 도착햇다. 하지만, 기름만 넣고는 바로 떠났는데, 별로 흥미로울 게 없었고 이번 여행에 시간이 부족했기 때문이었다. 첫 인상은 생각보다 크네~ 였다.

But when I filled the car at CO-OP, they refused to give me membership points. They said the co-op membership is city-wise which means they are not going to give points to anyone from outside the city. What the hell is that!

근데 CO-OP에서 기름을 넣는데, 포인트 적립을 안해주는 거다. 거기 말로는 회원은 도시별로 한다고. 그러니까, 자기네 도시 사람이 아니면 포인트를 주지 않는다는데… 이건 뭔 황당한 소린지.

Around quarter to nine, I got to North Battleford, SK and had breakfast there. I boiled the water at the parking lot using the electric kettle for cup-ramen.

8시 45분쯤에 노스 배틀포드에 도착해서 거기서 아침을 먹었다. 주차장에서 전기 주전자로 물을 끓여서 컵라면을 먹었다.

정오쯤에 로이드민스터에 도착했는데, 사스카츄완과 알버타의 경계에 있는 도시다. 그러니까 도시의 일부는 알버타에 속해있고, 나머지는 사슼카츄완에  속해있다. 내가 그 도시에 대해  처음 들었을 때엔, 시간대가 2개 있다고 했는데, 예전에  그랬는진 모르곘지만 현재는 사스카츄완에 속한 곳도 알버타 시간대를 쓰고 있다. 재밌는 건, 경계의 동쪽에 사는 사람은 사스카츄완 정부에 세금을 내고, 서쪽에 사는 사람은 알버타 정부에 세금을 낸다는 거.

I arrived at Edmonton, the first destination of this travel around 4:30pm. I heard so many good and great things about the West Edmonton Mall. I could not wait even one more seconds to see it!

But it just made me disappointed. I should have skipped Edmonton and its big mall. It’s just big, not fancy. There was almost no difference from Polo Park where I live except its stupid huge size.

4시 반에 첫 목적지인 에드먼튼에 도착했다. 웨스트 에드먼튼 몰에 대해 너무나 말을 많이 들어서 잔뜩 기대하고 있었다. 빨리 보고 싶어서 도저히 참을 수가 없었다!

그런데 완전 실망. 차라리 에드먼튼하고 쇼핑몰을 그냥 건너뛰어어야 한다는 생각이 들었다. 그냥 크기만 하고 그 뿐이었다. 내가 사는 곳에 있는 폴로파크 쇼핑몰하고 다를 바가 전혀 없다. 단지 무식하게 크다는 거 빼고.

And I made the reservation of the Motel by the phone in the Leduc, which is in South of Edmonton. I drove down there about 30 minutes. And when I got there, they said, they cannot take us in because there was all blacked-out, and the computer did not work. Oh, stupid!

You know, I was so tired and sleepy.

We went back to Edmonton for Walmart to buy an inverter which changes car-power into house-power. I was driving looking for a Walmart, but I could not find. While I was driving on the highway, my friend’s son said, “There’s Walmart!” I checked to him, and he said not sure. I asked again, was there or not because the highway exit was coming in right front of me, and I had to decide to exit or keep on highway.

“WHY!!!!,” then the mother screamed and shouted, “do you shout to my precious son!!!!” I was extremely astonished. First, because she was really  really loud, and second, she was extremely upset and mad. But I was not shouting, even I did not raise my voice.

여관에 전화로 예약을 했는데, 르뒥이라고 에드먼튼 남쪽에 있는 곳이다. 약 30분정도를 달려 갔는데, 막상 가니 입실이 안된다는 거다. 그게, 완전 정전이 되었는데, 컴퓨터가 작동을 하지 않아서라고. 아 정말!

지치고 피곤했단 말야.

정말 피곤해서, 좀 자고 상쾌한 마음으로 다음 날 출발하려고 했는데, 이렇게 상황이 날 안도와 줄 수가!!!

“If there is no Walmart, that does not mean we’re gonna die! We can just make turn and come out again! Then WHY WHY WHY do you shout to my son!!!!”

Oh my God.. This is nothing but the perfect and fantastic pair of idiot son and crazy mom.

Anyway, we went back to the big mall, and at the parking lot, she let her boy go out and ask for the direction. The boy came back and said, “right and right.” So I drove just as the boy told me. But I could not find one. I circled three times but still there was no Walmart.

Then I went back to the parking lot again, and I got off and asked. The direction was actually left and left. The young boy of grade four studied English very much in Korea, and he studied about half year in down the USA, and also was studying in Canada for a year. Still he could not listen or understand that simple words.

월마트에서 자동차 인버터(차량용 직류 12v 전원을 가정용 교류 110v로 바꿔주는 장치)를 사기 위해서 월마트를 가기로 했다. 그래서 에드먼튼으로 다시 돌아갔다.

월마트를 얼핏 본 기억은 있었지만 막상 쉽게 찾을 수가 없었다. 그래서 어느정도 헤매다가 웨스트 에드먼튼 몰  근처에 와서, 대형 마트 주차장에 가서 문 닫고 나오는 직원에게 길을 물어봐서, 그 대로 가서 찾을 수 있었다.

정말, 대부분의 도시에선 월마트 찾기가 아주 쉬웠는데, 이렇게 월마트 찾기가 어려운 적은 처음이었던 듯 하다.

And I left Edmonton after 11pm. While I was driving on highway 16, I wanted to find a Motel as soon as possible because I did not sleep right for two days. And it was not easy to find one. Just before Entwistle (I did not know the name), I also pulled over again by the police. But I had no idea why because I was not overspeeding. The officer came and asked me whether I was drugged. I said no. He asked me again about alcoholic drinks. “No, why?” I answered.

에드먼튼을 11시쯤에  떠났고 16번 도로를  운전해 가면서 여관을 빨리 찾고 싶었다. 아직 제대로 한 번도 잠을 자본 적이 없기 때문이었는데, 여관을 발견하기란 쉽지 않았다. 그리고 Entwistle 조금 전에 (그런 곳이 있는 지도 몰랐음) 경찰에게 다시 한 번 잡혔다. 이번엔 과속도 하지 않았는데 이유를 알 수 없었다. 경찰이 마약했냐고 묻더군. 아니라고 하니, 술 마셨냐고. -_-;; “아뇨, 왜요?”라고 대답했다.

He said I was too slow driving 80km/h on 110km/h road. I explained that I was trying to read the signs to find a motel. Then he explained how to get the nearest one. He also was so kind. And that was the second time I was pulled over by the police officer in my entire life. Twice in two days. Once too fast, the other too slow.

경찰은 내가 110 도로에서 80으로 달렸는데 너무 느려다고 했다. 그래서 여관을 찾기 위해 표지판을 읽던 중이었다고 얘기하자 가까운 여관 가는 법을 알려줬다. 역시 친절했다. 그리고 이게 내 인생에서 경찰에게 걸린 두 번째 경우다. 이틀동안 두번 -_-. 한 번은 너무 빨라서, 한 번은 너무 느려서.

And I went the motel and got a room. The motel owner told me that he heard the news saying there is severe thunder storm in Calgary, and a boy died camping around Calgary. I thanked God for His giving me nice weather on my way.

그래서 그 여관에 가서 방을 잡았다. 여관 주인이 뉴스를  들었는데, 캘거리에 심각한 폭풍이 있고, 주변에서 캠핑하던 아이 한 명이 죽었다고 얘길 해 줬다. 내 가는 길엔 좋은 날씨를 주신 하나님께 감사했다.

That was another day.

그렇게 또 하루를 보냈다.

For some reason, I began the trip in the evening or night. It was not easy trip.

몇몇 이유 때문에, 이번엔 여행을 저녁에 출발했고, 쉽지 않은 여행이 되었다.

I drove my friend’s car – Chrysler Neon 2000, and just before depart, the button of the shift knob broke and it came out of the knob.The thing is, we can shift between N-D, but not to R or P. And not on P, the key does not come out.

크라이슬러 네온 2000년식인 친구 차를 몰았는데, 출발하기 직전에 변속 레버의 버튼이 부러져서 빠져나왔다. 문제는 중립과 주행은 바꿀 수 있는데, 후진이나 파킹은 바꿀 수 없다는 거. 그리고 파킹이 아니면 열쇠가 빠지지 않는다는 거.

My friend was extremely angry, and said we could not go travel by the car. The travel was about to disappear like bubbles. Anyway, I persuaded her and and we began. It was 8pm. I put the broken button onto its place and had to hold it while I was driving – the entire travel of 18 days.

친구는 무지 화가 나서, 차로 여행을 안간다고 했다. 모든 여행이 물거품으로 사라지는 순간이었다. 어째든겨우 설득해서 저녁 8시에 출발했다. 부러진 버튼을 제 자리에 꼽고는 여행하는 18일 동안 운전하는 내내 잡고 있어야만 했다.

From her apartment at Pembina and Bishop Grandin, I drove to my home through  Bishop Grandin to the West and, Route 90 North, Grant Avenue West, Morray Street North, and Portage Avenue West. And 5 minutes after departure, on the Bishop Grandin I met another stoppers of my travel – the geese.

비숍 그랜딘과 펨비나에 있는 친구 아파트에서 비숍 그랜딘 서쪽 방향, 90번도로 북쪽, 그랜트 애비뉴 서쪽, 모레이 북쪽, 포티지 서쪽을 타고 일단 집으로 왔다. 그런데, 친구 집에서 출발한지 5분만에 여행의 또 다른 방해꾼을 만났다. 바로 거위.

Because of the slow geese, all the cars in both ways had to stop for a while. And actually it happens several times every day.

느긋한 거위 때문에 양방향의 모든 차들이 멈춰야 했다. 사실 이런 일은 날마다 대여섯 번씩은 발생한다.

And my friend join the CO-OP membership on the west-end of Winnipeg. We stopped at Gladstone, MB around 10pm for pee break, and it was not dark at that  time!

그리고 위니펙 서쪽끝에 있는 CO-OP 주유소에서 회원 가입을 하고,글래드스톤에서 잠시 쉬를 하기 위해  멈췄다. 그 때가 10시쯤이었는데, 그 때까지 어둑해지지 않았다!

I kept driving to Russel, MB and took 50 minutes break there, and it was after midnight. And 30 minutes later, I crossed the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. And I fueled up at Yorkton, SK. The thing happened after that.

레쎌까지 계속 운전해 갔고, 거기서 약 50분 정도 쉬었는데, 이미 자정을 넘긴 시간이었다. 거기서 30분 정도를 가서 마니토바와 사스카츄완 주경계를 넘었다. 그리고 욕톤에서 기름을 넣었는데, 그 뒤에 문제가 생겼다.

It was really dark night, and there was only one car running far before me on number 16 highway. So I speeded up a little bit. Between Yorkton and Darfoe, a car came after me and he was tailgating quite much! I thought he wanted to pass me, so I let him go – but he did not pass still tailgating. So I went back to my pace.

정말 어두운 밤이었고, 16번 도로에는 내 한참 앞에 딱 한대만 달리고 있었다. 그래서 속도를 좀 올렸다. 욕톤과 다포 사시에서, 내 뒤에 어떤 차 한대가 오더니 완전 딱 붙는 게 아닌가! 추월하려나보다 해서 비켜줬는데 가지 않고 계속 딱 붙어 온다. 그래서 내 원래 페이스대로 돌아갔다.

Then a splendid flashing lights came on the car – that was police patrol car. So I slowed down and pulled over. The officer came and said that I was running 135km/h on the road with 110km/h limit. He took my driver’s licence to the police car, and looked up something. Probably he found my clean driver’s abstract and that I had 2 merit points.

그 때에… 갑자기 현란한 불빛이 번쩍번쩍 – 경찰차였던 것이다. 그래서 속도를 줄이고 차를 갓길에 세웠다. 경찰이 오더니 110도로에서 135로 달리고 있었다고 말해주고는 운전면허증을 경찰차로 가져가서 뭔가 조회를 했다. 아마 나의 깨끗한 기록과, 벌점이 아니라 득점 2점이 있는 걸 봤겠지.

When the officer came back to me, he said he would not give me a ticket (HALLELUJAH!) but a break. “PLEASE slow down. The wild animals come on the road, and it is hard to find them. It’s very dangerous.”

경찰이 돌아와서는 딱지는 끊지 않겠지만 주의를 주겠다고 했다(할렐루야!). “좀 천천히 가세요. 야생동물들이 도로에 나오거든요. 그게 잘 안보여요. 꽤 위험해요.”

And the thing is, the officer was really  really kind and gentle, and mild. And second thing is that it is not possible to recognise police car at night.

근데, 경찰이 정말 정말 친절하고 부드럽고 상냥하다. 또 한가지는, 밤에는 경찰차를 알아보는 게 불가능하다는 거.

You know what, that was my first time to be stopped by a police officer in my entire life.

그리고 이게 내 인생에서 첫 번째로 경찰에게 걸린 거다.

And I had another pee break at Dafoe, SK, and I took about two hours’ nap 30 minutes after there.

다포에서 한 번 더 쉬를 하고, 30분 정도 더 가서 약 2시간 정도 눈을 붙였다.

And I would like to call that a day even though that was already next day.

이미 다음 날을 훨씬 넘긴 시간이지만, 여기까지 첫째날이라고 하겠다.

After I fix the problem yesterday just make metacity run on start up, I found that each and every compiz features does not work at all. That really bothers me.

This time was easy, I made compiz which can be found on /usr/bin/ run on start up instead of metacity.

And now I have title bar and all compiz features work fine.

I am happy.

Any way, I was supposed to write the postings about travelling with photos but HP laptop does not help me at all, or Ubuntu.

어제 metacity를 시작 프로그램에 등록해서 문제를 해결한 후에, compiz의 기능들이 하나도 작동하지 않는 걸 알았다. 정말 짜증난다.

하지만 이번엔 쉬웠다. /usr/bin/ 에 있는 compiz를 metacity 대신에 시작프로그램에 등록했다.

이젠, 타이틀 바도 나오고 compiz의 기능들도 모두 잘 작동한다.

오 좋다.

어째든, 원래는 여행기를 사진과 함께 올려야 하는데, HP 노트북이 날 안도와준다. 아니면 우분툰가?

I use Ubuntu Jaunty and compiz-fusion as my window manager.

There was no problem in the day, but when I turned on my computer this evening, I found there were no title bars on all windows.

I searched the internet and did everything which was written in many forums just to find out nothing work.

And when I tried to run System – Preferences – Windows, I got a message “Window Manager unknown has not registered a configuration tool.”

And when I run ‘metacity’ in terminal, the title bar restored. So I made it as start up programme.

Now, it works fine.

난 우분투 Jaunty를 사용하는데, 창 관리자로는 compiz-fusion을 쓴다. (뭐 대부분 그렇겠지만)

오늘 낮엔 아무 문제가 없었는데, 저녁에 컴터를 키니, 모든 창에 타이틀바가 없다. 왜 그, 프로그램 제목 나오고, 최대화 최소화 버튼이 오른쪽에 있는 그 줄.

인터넷을 찾아서 포럼들에 써 있는 거 다 해봤는데 모두 헛수고.

그러다 System – Preferences – Windows를 실행해 봤는데, Window Manager unknown has not registered a configuration tool란 메세지가 나왔다.

그 후에 터미널에서 metacity를 실행시켜 봤는데, 타이틀바가 다시 생겼다. 그래서 시작 프로그램에 metacity를 포함시켰다.

이젠 다시 아무 이상없이 잘 된다.

I use Pidgin on Ubuntu box for primary messenger, and it is very important to me because I have to chat with someone in Korea.

And a few days ago, suddenly it began to spit the message of “Waiting for Network Connection” and it did not show any contacts!

I tried again and again for several days, and the problem just stayed. I changed many network settings and pidgin preferences but nothing was helpful.

Today, I came to stop the network Manager service:

sudo /etc/init.d/networkManager stop

and I found the pidgin worked again!

So I just uninstalled the package.

한국에 있는 분과 채팅을 꼭 해야 하기 때문에 메신저가 필요한데, 우분투에서 피진이란 걸 쓴다.

근데 몇일 전부터 갑자기 네트웍 연결을 기다린다는 말이 나오고 연락처가 하나도 표시가 되지 않았다.

몇일을 기다리며 여러 시도를 해봤지만 문제는 여전. 네트웍 설정도 바꿔보고, 프로그램 옵션들도 바꿔봤지만 소용이 없다.

오늘, 어쩌다가 네트웍 매니저란 서비스를 중단시켜 봤다.

sudo /etc/init.d/networkManager stop

어, 그런데 피진이 잘 된다!

그래서 내친김에 해당 패키지를 아예 삭제해 버렸다.

I can see the North Korea with the amazing high price of $0.69 per minute while Japan has $0.05 and most European countries of $0.03.

But where is South Korea?

If that price is of South Korea, MTS sucks.

북한은 목록에 있는데 분당 69센트라는 매우 놀랍게 비싼 가격이다. 일본은 분당 5센트, 대부분의 유럽은 3센튼데!

그런데 남한은 어디에 있지?

만일 저 가격이 남한거라면, MTS 엄청 나쁘다.
