오늘 은행에 가서 모기지 대출을 받았다.
몇년 전 광고에서 모기지란 말을 처음 봤을 때는 ‘모가지‘로 보였다. -_-;;
다들 알겠지만, 모기지 대출은 주택 담보 대출이다. 그런데 이 단어가 참 의미가 생생한 거 같다.
mortgage는 프랑스어에서 온 말로, 단어의 형태나 t 발음이 안되는 것으로 충분히 알 수 있다. (집을) 저당 잡힌다는 의미인데, 이 단어의 -gage는 어미로 볼 수 있을 거 같다. -gage로 끝나는 단어들이 많으니까.
앞의 mort를 보자. mort는 라틴어에서 파생된 말로 스페인어로는 muerte인 ‘죽음’이라는 뜻이다. 영어 단어에는 mortal에 잘 나타나 있다. 결국 갚지 않으면 죽는다는 의미가 바로 모기지 대출이 아닐까?
정말 무서운 단어지만, 단어보다 모기지 대출의 실체는 더 무섭다. 
Today, I got mortgage loan from my bank.
The pronunciation of mortgage is like that of “neck” in Korean. Neck in Korean is mo-ga-jee. In Korean saying, mogajee means fired from job or death.
Well, let see the word mortgage. This came from French, and the t is a silence. The first part, mort, is from latin which means death. We can see that in mortal. In Spanish, death is muerte which is similar to mort.
Then, what does mortgage loan mean? I think, this name is warning from the bank – If you don’t pay back the loan, all you have is nothing but DEATH.
This name really terrifies me. I am now as good as dead.
언어유희의 가장 보편적이고 쉬운 방법은 동음이의어, 즉 소리는 같거나 비슷하면서 뜻이 다른 단어를 사용하는 것이다.
예를 들어 “올 크리스마스 추리는 좀 추리하다”고 할 때, 앞의 추리는 영어로 나무지만, 뒤의 추리는 모양이 예쁘지 않다는 말이다. 같거나 비슷한 발음이 연이어 쓰여서 재미있다고 느끼는 것이다.
성경에도 이와 비슷한 말들이 많이 있다는 것을 살짝 알게 되었다. 요즘 NIV 성경을 보는 데 곳곳에 주석이 달려 있다. 그 주석중에 상당히 많은 것을 차지하는 것이 “xxx의 히브리어 발음은 yyy라는 뜻의 히브리어 발음과 유사하다”는 것이다.
예를 들어 히브리어로 사람 또는 남자는 ‘아담’이라는 소리다. 그리고 흙은 ‘아다마’라고 한다. 그러므로 하나님께서 아담에게 흙에서 왔으니 흙으로 돌아가라는 말씀은 아담은 아다마에서 왔으니 아다마로 가라는 식으로 들리게 되어, 비슷한 발음의 반복이 된다.
이렇게 하면 비슷한 소리의 다른 단어를 사용하는 언어 유희가 되면서 동시에 리듬을 타게 되어 문장 자체에 운율이 생기게 된다.
사람들이 교만하여서 하나님만큼 높아지기 위해 쌓았던 탑, 바벨은 히브리어로 ‘혼동’이라는 단어와 아주 흡사한 소리라고 한다. 바벨에서 인간의 언어가 갈라지고 혼동되었으니 참 맞는 말이라고 생각한다.
인간은 언어 유희를 사용하기 위해 기존에 있는 단어와 언어를 사용하지만, 하나님께서는 창조주시기 때문에 영적인 뜻에 맞도록 언어를 아예 만드셨을 것이다.
이러한 언어 유희를 생각하면서 성경을 읽으니 참 재미있어진다. 비록 일일이 주석을 읽어야 하지만.
미친 것들.도대체 무슨 정신으로 이딴 광고를 만드는 지 모르겠다.
남편이 뒈졌지만 10억을 받아서 너무 좋다는 건지, 아니면 10억을 받고 싶으면 남편을 죽이라는 건지!
그것도 아니면 남편이 뒈진 것만 해도 즐거운데 10억까지 받아서 행복하다는 건지!
그리고 남편이 뒈진지 얼마 되지 않는 미시같은 과부가 보험사의 잘생긴 직원을 집안으로 맞이하는 건 우연인건지 아니면 복선인건지?
아마 이 광고는 젊은 부인들을 향한 광고라고 생각된다. “남편만 죽이면 10억도 받을 수 있고, 게다가 잘생긴 젊은 직원과 놀아날 수도 있다!”
그리고 요즘 구인난도 어렵다는 데, 직장을 구하는 청년들을 향한 광고임에도 틀림이 없다. “우리 회사에 입사하면, 젊고 예쁜 과부들과 질펀하게 즐길 수 있다!”
미친 개새끼들. 이딴 것을 광고라고! 이 광고가 바로 푸르덴셜이란다. 아직 푸르덴셜 보험에 가입한 적도 없지만, 내가 고객이었다면 바로 해지했을 것이다.
평생 푸르덴셜은 이용하지 않을 것이다!

I don’t understand why they made this commercial advertisement.
Do they want to say that her husband snuffed it but she is happy for million dollars?
Do they want to say that ‘Wives, if you want to get million dollars, kill your husbands!’?
Or that she was happy for her husband’s death, and even more became happier for million dollars?
And is it a hint for something that at the last scene, she takes the handsome agent in her home?
I believe that this ad is towards young wives saying “Kill your husband, and you will get million dollars. More over, you can enjoy great sex with our handsome agents”.
I heard that these days recruiting is difficult. So this ad also must go towards young job seekers saying “Come into our company to enjoy great sex with our young and pretty clients”.
Fuck them! Jerk! This is the advertisement of Prudential Korea. I am not their client, but if I were, I would just cancel all their insurances.
And I will be against Prudential Insurance for life!
결론부터 말하자면 그럴 수 있다. 물론 그렇다고 해서 모든 오픈소스가 다 양의 탈을 쓴 늑대라는 것은 아니다.[이 글은 이제명 개인의 의견이며 GNU, GNU Korea 또는 자유 소프트웨어 재단의 공식 입장과는 관련이 없다]
내가 수많은 오픈소스 라이센스들을 다 읽어보고 검토한 것도 아니고, 오픈소스 라이센스 중에도 매우 다양한 것들이 존재할 것이다. 그러나 오픈소스 라이센스와 자유 소프트웨어 라이센스는 구별되어야 한다. 간단하게 말하면 자유 소프트웨어는 훨씬 좁은 범위에 있다. 이는 오픈소스 라이센스를 모아 놓은 Open Source Initiative의 페이지에 대표적인 자유 소프트웨어 라이센스인 GNU GPL이 포함되어 있는 것만 봐도 알 수 있다.
간단한 이야기를 하면, 마이크로소프트사도 오픈소스를 하겠다고 하지만 (정확히 말하면 공유소스) 자유소프트웨어를 하겠다고는 죽어도 말하지 않는다.
자유 소프트웨어는 “자유”가 중요한 것이지 “열려 있다는 사실” 자체가 중요한 것이 아니다. 오픈소스는 자유가 없을 가능성이 있다. 자유 소프트웨어의 힘을 보여주는 간단한 예를 하나 보자.
GNU Korea에 같이 있는 최xx님. 물리학을 전공하고 현재 박사 과정을 밟고 있다. 프로그래밍에 대한 재능이 매우 번뜩이는 분으로 학부 시절에 시뮬레이터를 제작하고 있었는데, 한가지 난관에 부딪혀서 완성하지 못하고 있었다. 그리고는 미완성된 코드를 GPL로 자신의 홈페이지에 올렸다. 한시간 뒤, 누군가 문제를 훌륭히 해결해서 돌려 주었다.
자유 소프트웨어는 인류의 집단 지성을 최대한 활용하고 인류의 발전을 가장 빠르게 이룰 수 있는 방법이다. 위의 간단한 예제에서도 보이지 않는가. 만일 코드를 자신이 소유해서 아무에게도 보여주지 않았더라면, 또는 소스를 자유가 없는 방법으로 열었다면, 문제를 해결할 수 없었을 것이다.
사실, 배고픈 사람에게는 그림의 떡이 아무 것도 없는 것보다 더 나쁘다. 그런 의미에서 일부 오픈소스는 더욱 큰 죄악이 될 가능성이 있고, 양의 탈을 쓴 늑대가 될 수 있다.
서울에서 부산까지 운전하고 가는 길을 생각해 보자. 그리고 운전자는 길을 모른다고 생각하자. 가장 좋은 방법은 경부 고속도르를 이용하는 것이다. 하지만, 그것만이 유일한 길이 아니다. 아무 것도 모르는 사람은 여러가지 길을 생각해 낼 수가 있다. 대부분의 사람들은 일반적인 길을 생각하겠지만, 인간의 다양성은 놀라운 것이어서, 특이한 방법과 길을 생각해 내는 사람들도 있을 것이다.
그러나, 그들에게 한 번, 길을 알려주면, 인간의 창의성은 사라져 버리고, 두뇌는 관성의 법칙대로 움직여서 그 길 외의 다른 길은 생각하려고도 않고, 노력해도 잘 되지 않을 것이다. 머리속에 그 길만이 맴돌 것이다. 그런데, 그 길을 사용할 수 없게 막아 놓는다면? 길만 막히는 것이 아니라 마음도 막히고 생각도 막히고 창의력도 막히는 것이다.
자유가 배제된 오픈소스는 인류에게 죄악이다. 자유 소프트웨어는 반드시 오픈소스지만, 오픈소스가 자유를 갖고 있는 것은 아니다.
인류의 발전에 관련해서는 특허에 관한 글에서 조금 더 쓸 예정이다.
어째든, 이런 이유로 말미암아 개발자들이 프로그램을 만드려거든 반드시 자유 소프트웨어 라이센스를 채택해야 한다. GNU General Public License를 채택하는 것이 최상책이라고 생각하지만, 이 라이센스가 마음에 들지 않는다면, 차선책으로 GNU GPL과 호환되는 라이센스를 사용하기 바란다. 자유소프트웨어가 아닌 오픈소스를 할 생각은 애시당초 버리기 바란다. 인류를 한 걸음 나아가게 하고 싶다면, 자유 소프트웨어 라이센스를, 뒷걸음 하도록 만들고 싶다면 자유롭지 않은 라이센스를 – 오픈소스던, 독점 소프트웨어던 – 사용하라.
To begin with the result, YES. But I don’t mean all open source licenses.

There are various open source licenses and I did not read and verified them all. But open source licenses must be distinguished from free software licenses. Simply speaking, free software has narrower scope than open source. We can know that. Look at the Open Source Initiative’s page where they listed open source licenses, then you can find GNU GPL there. Well, let’s hear what Microsoft said, they would like to do open source (in exact word, Shared source), but they would never say free software in any case.
What free software really matters is “FREEDOM” itself, not the fact “OPENED”. Open source may lack of freedom. Let me tell you an episode which shows the power of free software:
Mr. Choi who is my colleague in GNU Korea studies in Physics now for doctor’s degree. When he was a college student, he was a brilliant programmer(and is too), and he was making a simulator. While programming, he faced a trouble which he cannot go alone. He posted his code in his homepage, and an hour later he got the code back, the trouble solved.
Free software is the one and only way to utilise human’s mass intelligence, and fastest way for the progress of human race. We can know that just by the small episode above. He might not be able to solve the trouble if he owned and did not post the code, or opened it without freedom.
In fact, the pie in the sky is worse than nothing for the hungry. In that aspect, some sort of open source license can be larger sin, and can be the wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Let’s see that some one is about to go from San Francisco to New York by driving his car. And let’s see that he does not know the way. The best way is to go on interstate high way. But that is not the only way. Naive one without knowledge can think various ways. Well, most of the people may think one general way, but by the surprising diversity of human race we may also have many geeks thinking different ways.
BUT once he is told the easy way, his creativity goes away, and his brain, following the law of inertia, would not think another way even though he tries. That way would be around his head. And now, let’s see the teller of the way blocked the way. What is blocked is not only the way. His heart, his thought, and his creativity are blocked together also.
An open source without freedom is sin to human race. Note that while free software is always open, open source does not always. I will write about the progress of human race in my future article on patent.
Any way, for these reason the developers should adopt free software license. I believe GNU General Public License is the best, but if you don’t like it, you can still choose one of the GNU GPL compatible licenses. Don’t ever think to adopt a license which lacks freedom. If you want to make human race go one step forth, DO ADOPT FREE SOFTWARE LICENSE. If you want to make human race go one step back, use any ‘not free’ licenses – I don’t care it be open source or proprietary.
Richard M. Stallman(RMS), the founder of Free Software Foundation, was at Korea from last Tuesday to this Sunday. He had five speeches for five days, and I was with him for three (or four in a sense) days.
As many people know, RMS does not make people around him comfortable. And of course there are so many complaints about him. And now, I want to write an excuse for him. Please note and know that this article is my private viewpoint, not the official standpoint of Free Software Foundation or RMS himself.
The above chart is very famous one. It is said that the general distribution would be like this, and this kind of distribution is most stable. In the aspect of economy of a society, the worst could be “poor” and the best “rich”. And the society where the middle class is the major would be the most stable one. And as you see, the majority is formed between worst and best. The two ends balances themselves.
This second chart is so bad. Most unstable and danger structure is this. In the aspect of society, this is about to be overturned. In this chart, there are no mutual actions between the two ends, and the balance of power broke down. When the one end called Best disappears, the majority moves towards worst to make it the centroid, the centre of weight. The society where the poor are major is not healthy.
This last chart is very ideal. But it is too ideal and utopiatic, so that it could not come true in real world but only in dream. It would be very good if all members of the society is rich, but that can’t be realised. Let’s replace worst and best to other words. Proprietary software companies such as Microsoft are standing on the left end, and on the right end, there are Free Software Foundation, RMS, and GNU Korea, and the likes.
The most ideal one should be the last chart – the world full of free software. But that might not be possible. Then what shall happen when FSF or RMS steps back because the ideal world can’t be realised? I see the world in second chart – full of proprietary software, and the users in slavery, robbed unfairly and still not allowed to say or stand against. I believe no one wishes this world. Then our last possible and hopeful option is the first one. To do this, there must be the proprietary software companies on the left end (they already are and will be), and against this, there also must be the people and organisations such as FSF, RMS, and GNU Korea standing on the right end even though it is not easy. Then in the middle of the two ends, there shall be the software and companies less proprietary. As much as we step back, the world will be filled with proprietary software. Thus FSF and RMS must be extreme and stand on the edge. I now believe that these three charts and simple words explain the reason why RMS should be extreme quite well.
To speak frankly, I felt so many difficulties and he was too tough to be with. He does not care about the people around him. But still, we have many reasons why we should respect him. No RMS, No GNU project, and possibly no concept of free software on the earth. It will not be too much tough if we think that his straightness and stubbornness is the power source for GNU project and his activities which should be praised.
지난 주에 자유 소프트웨어 재단의 설립자인 RMS (Richard M. Stallman)가 한국에 왔다 갔다. 화요일 저녁 한국에 와서 다음과 삼성에서 사내 강연을 하고, POC 2006(전경련 회관), 진보넷(성공회 대학교), 그리고 GNU Korea(연세대학교)에서 강연을 하였다.RMS에 대해서는 많은 비판과 불만이 있다. 그에 대해서 내 나름대로 해명을 조금 해보고자 한다. 물론 이 글은 자유 소프트웨어 재단이나 RMS 자신의 의견이 아니며, 그들의 의견과 대치될 수도 있다. 나의 의견이기 때문이다.
그리고 고지식하기 때문에 어느정도 예측이 가능해서 언제쯤 화를 내겠다던가, 어떻게 하면 화를 낼 것이라던가 예측하기가 쉽고 또 잘 들어 맞습니다. 
RMS는 많은 분들이 경험한 것처럼 고지식하고 쉽게 화를 내서 상대하기가 쉽지 않습니다. RMS를 경험했던 많은 분들은 앞으로 개인적으로는 만나지 않겠다는 분들이 많습니다. 그의 고집은 그의 머리카락과 수염을 봐도 알 수 있습니다. 제가 듣기로는 GNU 프로젝트를 시작하면서 이발과 면도를 중단했다고 합니다. 하지만 다시 생각해 보면, 그의 그런 엄청난 고집이 있기 때문에 GNU 프로젝트가 존속하고, 여러 자유 소프트웨어가 개발되어 나오는 것이라고 생각됩니다. RMS의 고집이야 그 사람과 직접 대면하지 않으면 상관없는 일이지만, 그의 고집으로인한 혜택은 전세계의 모든 사람이 누리는 것입니다.
이 세번째 도표는 이상적인 구도를 보여준다. 하지만 이러한 모습은 몽상적이고 유토피아적이어서 현실 세계에서는 이루어질 수가 없다. 사회의 모든 구성원이 다 같이 갑부라면 제일 좋겠지만, 그 것은 현실 세계에서는 불가능한 꿈일 뿐이다. 이제 Worst와 Best를 다른 단어로 대체해 보자. 계속 이야기했던 것과 같이 Poor와 Rich로 바꿀 수도 있지만, 한 번 이를 Proprietary software와 Free software로 바꿔보자. Microsoft를 비롯해서 수많은 독점 소프트웨어들이 왼쪽 끝에 서 있고, 자유소프트웨어 재단, RMS, 그리고 GNU Korea 등이 바른쪽 끝에 서있다.
가장 이상적인 것은 3번 도표로 온 세상이 자유 소프트웨어로 충만한 것이다. 하지만, 현실세계에서 이런 것은 이루어질 수가 없을 것이다. 그러면, 3번이 불가능하다는 이유로 자유소프트웨어 재단이나 RMS가 자신의 고집을 포기하고 극단성을 희석시킨다면 어떻게 될까? 내 생각에는 세상이 2번 도표와 같이 되어 독점 소프트웨어가 가득하며 모든 사용자들은 피해를 당하고도 제대로 항변하지 못하는 노예와 비슷한 처지로 전락하고 말 것이다. 누구도 그렇게 되기를 바라지는 않을 것이다. 그러면, 현실적으로 가장 좋은 상태는 도표 1번인데, 이렇게 하기 위해서는 먼저 일부 독점 소프트웨어들이 왼쪽 끝에서 버티고 (그들은 당연히 그렇게 할 것이고 또 하고 있다) 또한 맞은편 극단에는 자유 소프트웨어 재단, RMS, GNU Korea를 비롯한 많은 사람들과 단체가 힘겹더라도 버티고 있어야 한다. 그러면 그 중간에 많은 덜 독점적인 회사들과 사람들이 설 수 있게 될 것이다. 자유 소프트웨어 재단과 같이 극단에 서 있어야 할 이들이 극단적인 성향을 희석시키는 만큼 세상은 독점이 가득하게 될 것이다. 나는 이 세 도표와 짧은 말로 자유소프트웨어 재단과 RMS, 그리고 GNU Korea등이 왜 철저하게 극단적이어야 하는지 잘 성명했다고 생각한다.
솔직히 RMS는 같이 다니기에는 너무 피곤하고 힘들다. 주위 사람에 대한 배려를 잘 모른다. 그러나 RMS를 좋게 보아야 하는 이유들도 충분히 있다. 그가 없었다면 GNU 프로젝트도 없었을 것이고, 자유 소프트웨어라는 개념 자체가 지구상에 없을지도 모른다. GNU 프로젝트와 그의 칭송받아야 할 활동을 지속하게 하는 원동력이 바로 주위 사람을 괴롭게 하는 것이라는 것을 생각하면 조금 덜 힘들지도 모르겠다.
우리 회사는 강변역에 붙은 테크노마트 사무동 (프라임 센터라고도 한다) 36층에 있다. 큰 건물이 그러하듯이 이 곳도 청소하시는 아주머니가 있고, 화장실의 휴지를 늘 확인하고 새로 넣어 준다.이 회사에 근무한지 햇수로는 3년이 되고 만으로 2년이 되는데, 그저께 처음으로 황당한 일을 당했다.
화장실에 가서 똥을 싸고 나서 휴지가 없다는 것을 알았다. 아! 이런… 낭패감이란…
다행히 화장실에 아무도 없어서 바지를 벗은 채로 옆칸에 가서 화장지를 뜯어와서 해결을 했다. 만일 화장실에 사람이 가득 가득 했으면 어떻게 했을까?
회사 화장실은 쓴 휴지를 변기에 버리도록 되어 있어서 남들이 쓴 휴지가 쓰레기통에 남아있는 일은 없다.
앞으로 조심해야겠다.
うちの会社はガンビョン駅のそばにあるテクノマートの事務セクション(プライムセンターとも言う)の36階にある。大きいビルはみなそうだけど、うちのビルも掃除するおばさんがいて、トイレの紙を毎日確認しておく。
この会社に働いて2年が過ぎたけど、おとといに初めてで悪いことに会った。
トイレで くそを垂らしてから紙のないことを分かった。あ！チクショウ！
あ、よかった。トイレに誰もいなかったので横に行って紙を持って来た。もしトイレに人がたくさんいたらどうしたのか。
ちなみに、うちのトイレにはゴミ箱がないので使った紙もない。
あ、これから本当に気をつかないと。
My office is in 36th floor of Technomart Office section (which is also called Prime Centre) next to Gangbyon subway station. Just as all the big buildings, this building also hires staffs for cleaning, and they check the toilet paper to refill everyday.
I have worked here for over two years, and the day before yesterday, I came to face horrible thing for the first time.
I found that there is no toilet paper in my booth after I pushed out my dung of out me. Oh, no! What a damn trouble!
Fortunately, there was no one in the rest room, and I went to next booth to get some toilet paper. What should I do if there have been full of people!
To tell one more fact, we don’t have a waste box in the booth which would have used paper for we just throw it into the bowels. So I had no choice to use the used paper. 
I have to be careful more from now on.
