[영어산책]Drive Standard to prevent car-jacking

Last November 26, a man tried to hijack a car from a woman here in Winnipeg.

The lady handed the key and asked, “This is standard transmission. Can you drive?”

Then the car-jacker looked, and tossed the key back to the lady and ran.

So, I strongly recommend you to drive standard transmission car to prevent your car from hijacking.

지난 11월 26일, 이곳 위니펙에서 어떤 남자가 자동차를 강탈하려던 사건이 있었다.

차에 침입해서 아줌마 운전자에게 위협을 해 자동차 열쇠를 넘겨 받았다. 그런데 그 아줌마가 한다는 소리가,

“이 차는 수동인데…. 운전할 수 있어요?”

차를 살펴보던 그 남자는 수동임을 확인하고 한숨 한 번 쉬고는 열쇠를  돌려주고 달아났다고 한다.

그러니 차량 강탈을 방지하려면 자동이 아니라 수동을 타는 게 최고. ^^

오늘의 영어는, 수동기어는 Manual Transmission보다는 Standard Transmission을 쓴다는 것. 물론 Manual Transmission도 통하지만. 그리고 변속기는 미쑝보다는 Transmission.

자동은 그냥 Automatic Transmission.

I saw Ancient OSes

These days, everybody is talking about Microsoft Windows 7 and Google Chrome OS.

But recently I saw two ancient OSes.

One is Microsoft Windows 95 on original Intel Pentium notebook.

The other computer has i80486 processor. This was running WordPerfect for DOS on MS DOS 4.

It was quite a long time that I saw pure text mode without any graphical things on it.

요즘엔 마이크로소프트 윈도7이랑 구글의 크롬 OS에 대해 얘기를 하는데, 난 최근에 수백년은 된 OS를 발견했다.

한명은 구형 인텔 펜티엄 프로세서를 쓰는 노트북에서 윈도95를 돌리고 있었다.

다른 한 명은 486인 데스크탑이었는데, MS-DOS 4에 워드퍼펙트 도스용을 돌리고 있었다.

그래픽 적인 요소 하나 없이 순수한 텍스트 모드를 보는 건 정말 오랫만이었다.

Eighth Day of 2009 Summer Trip

This day, Mr. Bill had another thing – he was supposed to volunteer to a golf club in Banff area. And the travellers wanted to take warm bath at Banff Hot Springs. So he gave us a ride to the springs and he gave us a word to come and pick us up a few hours later.

이날은 빌 아저씨가 다른 일정이 있었다. 밴프 지역의 어느 골프장에 자원봉사하러 가는 거였다. 우리 여행객들은 밴프 온천에 한 번 가보고 싶었다. 그래서 빌 아저씨가 우리를 온천에 데려다 주고, 몇시간 후에 데리러 오겠다고 했다.

And when I went into the hot springs, I was so much disappointed. It was even smaller and worse than any small public bath house in Korea. So we decided not to pay and go in.

내가 밴프 온천에 가서 보니 완전 실망이었다. 한국의 어느 조그만 동네 목욕탕보다 더 작고 형편없었다. 그래서 여긴 안가고 스킵하기로 했다.

So we took a bus to downtown Banff.

그래서 버스를 타고 밴프 다운타운으로 갔다.

Banff town was quite beautiful place where you can see the great Rockies at your hotel or any streets.

밴프 타운은 꽤 아름다운 곳이었다. 자신이 머무는 호텔이나 어느 길에서나 록키 산을 볼 수 있었다.

It was quite much tourists’ town rather than residential place. And I met some people from Utah on a motor cycle.

밴프는 거주지라기 보다는 완전 관광지였다. 미국 유타주에서 오토바이 타고 온 사람들도 만났다.

Then Mr. Bill came and picked us up to Canmore. And we walked about 7 or 10km along the town of Canmore. It was nice hiking course, and Mr. Bill told us that he walks everyday about 12km – preparing himself for the winter ski.

그 후에 빌 아저씨가 와서 우릴 태우고 캔모어로 돌아갔다. 거기서 약 7-10km정도 산책을 했다. 꽤 괜찮은 산책 코스였다. 빌 아저씨는 겨울에 스키 탈 것을 대비하기 위해서 날마다 12km정도 걷는다고 한다.

And there was an old house of North West Mounted Police, which is the former body of RCMP.

캔모어에는 NWMP라고 있었는데 (북서부 기마 경찰), 현재 캐나다의 연방 경찰인 RCMP (왕립 캐나다 기마 경찰)의 전신이다.

There was so many ducks and geese and other animals. I also saw some of the elks in the right down town of Canmore!

그리고 많은 오리와 거위를 비롯한 동물들이 있었다. 심지어는 캔모어 다운타운에서 엘크들도 봤다.

We also walked along the railway for a bit, and I was told that two or three months ago, a young girl around early twenties was hit by a train to death. We was listening to an iPod and was walking on the railway track. She was not able to hear the train honking.

Drink and Driver is bad but also Listening and Walking on the TRACK is dangerous too. Please DON’T do that! That is crazy and suicide.

또한 기차길 따라서도 조금 걸었는데, 듣기로는 두세달 전에 20대 초반의 여자가 기차에 치여 죽었다고 한다. 아이팟을 듣고 있었고 철길 위를 걷고 있었다고 한다. 기차의 경적을 듣지 못했다고 한다.

술먹고 운전하는 것도 나쁘지만 음악을 들으면서 철길 위를 걷는 것도 위험하다. 그러니 제발 그러지좀 말길. 이건 미친 짓이고 자살 행위다.

One strange thing was that there were so many rabbits in town. I asked about it and Mr. Bill explained to me:

한가지 눈에 띄는 것은 토끼가 너무 많다는 것이었다. 이에 대해 물어보니 대답을 해 줬는데:

Five or six years ago, there was no rabbits in town. But a family had rabbits as pets, then they were just fed up with them. And they just threw away out of the house, knowing what to do.

5-6년 전엔 마을에 토끼가 없었다고 한다. 그런데 어떤 가정이 애완동물로 키우다  실증이 나자 어찌할 바를 모르고 그냥  밖에 버렸다고 한다.

Then the rabbits mated themselves and the number of them explosively increased. Now the town is full of rabbits. But at nights, cougars come down to the town and eat them.

토끼들은 스스로 짝짓기를 하고는 숫자가 폭발적으로 늘었다. 이제 마을은 토끼로 가득하게 되었다. 하지만 밤에는 쿠거들이 내려와서 토끼를 먹는다고 한다.

Our original plan  was to leave Canmore for Vancouver at night. But Mr. Bill persuaded me not to do for it is dangerous at night. So we stayed one more night at Canmore.

원래 계획은 밤에 캔모어를 떠나 밴쿠버로 출발하는 것이었는데, 빌 아저씨가 위험하다고 하지 말라고 말려서 캔모어에서 하루 밤 더 묵었다.

My bathroom sink was quite slow and I could see the hairs and other things stuck down the hole.

And I bought the Drano Max Gel (900ml) at Walmart.

I poured half bottle of it slowly, and waited 20 minutes, then flushed it with hot water.

Now the sink is quite fast. I am satisfied.

화장실 세면대가 머리카락이랑 몇가지 오물로 막혀서 물이 꽤 느리게 내려갔다.

그래서 월마트 가서 Drano Max Gel이라고 트래펑 비슷한 걸 샀다.

설명에 써 있는 대로 반병을 천천히 붓고 20분을 기다린 후에 뜨거운 물로 씻어 내렸다.

이제는 물이 꽤 빨리 빠진다. 성능은 만족스럽다.

Residential Tenancies Branch

Several Months ago, I got a notice from my care taker that my rental fee would be increased to $711 from November. I was paying $677 each month, so it is $34. I just thought, Wow… OK.

Then I got a letter from the government of Manitoba – Department of Finance, Residential Tenancies Branch, August 27th. The letter said that the increase was too much, so the government adjusted it to $702.

Yes! I got $9 discount thanks to the government.

And I forgot it.

Then, on October 14th, I got another letter from the same government branch.

The letter said that my apartment company appealed to the government about the discount of my rent. Then the government dug deeper about it. The letter has many many numbers, formulas, and the statements from the law and acts. Then the letter has a “FINAL ORDER” saying my payment should go even down to $700!

So, I am paying $700 instead of $711.

And my apartment has two bed rooms (one big, one small), a living room, a kitchen and dining room, a bathroom, a storage, a cloth place. And my rental fee also covers heat and water.

여러달 전에 아파트 관리인에게서 공지를 하나 받았는데, 내 아파트 렌트비가 11월부터 711불로 올라간다는 것이었다. 내가 677불을 내고 있었으니 34불이 올라가는 셈이다. 뭐 그냥 어이쿠.. 이런 이라고만 생각을 했다.

그 후에 마니토바 주정부에서 8월 27일 편지를 받았는데, 재정부의 거주민 부서였다. 그 편지에는 내 렌트비 증가폭이 너무 커서 702불로 조정을 했다는 내용이었다.

앗싸~ 주정부 덕에 9불 할인을 받는 구나~

그리고는 잊어버리고 있었다.

그 후에 10월 14일 또 다시 같은 정부 부서에서 편지를 받았다.

그 편지 내용을 보니 내 아파트 회사가 내 렌트비 증가 할인에 대해서 정부에 항소를 했고, 정부가 상세히 조사를 했다고 한다. 그 내용엔 여러 숫자들과 공식들 그리고 법령들이 어지럽게 써 있었다. 그리고 그 편지엔 “최종 명령”이 들어 있었는데, 내 렌트비는 오히려 700불로 또 내려갔다!

그래서 현재 711불이 아니라 700불을 내고 있다.

참고로 내 아파트는 방이 두 개(하나는 크고 하나는 작다), 거실 하나, 주방 겸 다이닝 룸이 하나, 화장실 하나, 창고 하나, 옷 보관소 하나 그렇게 있고 렌트비에 난방과 물은 포함되어 있다.

October 23 was SAG day in Manitoba which stands for Special Area Group. On SAG day, all schools from kindergarten to grade 12 are day off and the teachers have conference. So my church had a day long programme for the parents.

Anyway, at lunch time, we ate hot dogs and then we had desserts.

Rev. Bush announced, “Age under 7 come first.”

Then a boy age 9 asked, “I am three in heart! Can I come now?”

Of course, rejected.

10월 23일은 마니토바 주의 SAG 데이였다. 이 날은 마니토바의 모든 학교가, 유치원부터 12학년(고3)까지 쉬는 날이고, 선생님들이 모여서 컨퍼런스를 한다. 그래서 우리 교회에서 부모님들을 위해 그날 하루 낮 프로그램을 운영했다.

어째든, 점심 시간에 핫도그를 먹고 나서 디저트를 먹었는데 목사님이 이렇게 선언했다.

“7살 이하 어린이 먼저 나오세요”

그러자 9살 먹은 한 남자애가 말하길

“전 마음은 세살인데 나와도 되나요?”라고 물었다.

당연히 안됐다.

Seventh Day of 2009 Summer Trip

On the seventh day of my trip, I stayed in Canmore and Mr. Bill took me several places in Banff. The first place was Johnston Canyon. It has very nice trail.

일곱째 날엔 캔모어에 머물렀고, 빌 아저씨가 밴프의 여러 지역에 데려다 줬다. 제일 먼저 간 곳은 죤스턴 캐년으로 등산로가 참 좋았다.

And there was a growing rock. Mr. Bill told me that the rock is  growing and coming forward little by little.

길목에 자라는 바위가 있었는데, 빌 아저씨가 말하길 조금씩 자라서 앞으로 튀어 나온다고 했다.

At the end of the trail, we got ink pots. Ink Pots are the six cool springs whose water colour is so beautiful. It just looks like ink. And I could see the bubbling and the water coming up from the ground. Mr. Bill told me that the colour of the water is because of the glacier sediments.

등산로 끝에는 물감통이라는 곳이 있는데, 물감통은 여섯개의 시원한 물이 나오는 샘으로 물 색이 참 아름답다. 마치 물감을 풀어 놓은 것 같은 색이다. 바닥에서부터 공기방울하고 물이 올라오는 걸 볼 수 있었다. 빌 아저씨가 물의 색이 저런 이유는 빙하 침전물 때문이라고 했다.

We left the Johnston Canyon for famous three lakes. On the way, we were able to see a herd of elks sleeping in a field. And there was only one which was not sleeping but watching. That was the leader of  the group which only has the right to have sex with all the female elks. Yes, that is real Noblesse Oblige!

죤스턴 캐년을 떠나 유명한 세 호수가 있는 곳으로 가는데, 가는 도중에 들판에서 한 무리의 엘크가 잠자는 걸 목격했다. 그런데 그 중에 딱 한 마리만 잠을 자지 않고 보초를 서고 있었다. 바로 무리의 우두머리로 무리 내의 모든 암컷과 섹스를 할 수 있는 권리를 유일하게 갖고 있다고 했다. 그래, 이거야 말로 노블리제 오블리제가 아닌가! ^^

But do not ask me which one is for the pictures above because I do not remember now.

Sixth Day of 2009 Summer Trip

The next day morning, we got up to find our old host preparing the sandwiches for lunch. By his car we looked around the town of Canmore. It was little and nice town. It was originally mine town but for now all mines were closed and it is much more touring and resorting town.

다음날  아침에 일어나니 집주인 할아버지가 점심으로 샌드위치를 만들고 계셨다. 그 분 차를 타고 캔모어 타운을 구경했는데, 조그마하고 예쁜 곳이었다. 원래는 탄광 마을이었다고 하는데 이제는 모든 탄광이 폐쇄되었고 지금은 관광도시로 이름을 갖고 있다.

Then we headed for Grassi Trail. The trail was named after Lawrence Grassi, the Italian Canadian who worked for Canadian Pacific Railway as a coal miner. The sign says he loved mountain and Canmore.

그 다음엔 그라씨 등산로로 갔는데, 이 길은 로렌스 그라씨가 만들었다고 한다. 그는 이탈리아에서 캐나다로 온 사람으로 캐나디언 퍼시픽 철도회사에서 석탄광 채굴자로 일을 했다고 한다. 안내를 보니 산과 캔모어를 사랑했다고 써 있다.

Which Way? 어느 길로?

I faced several times with these kind of signs showing two different levels of ways. I chose “more difficult” all the time.

등산하면서 난이도가 다른 두 개의 길을 알려주는 표지판을 여러번 만났는데 난 늘 더 어려운 걸 택했다.

We found some people cliff climbing. She looked so brave. 암벽등반 하는 사람들을 발견했는데 꽤 용감해 보였다.

And this is Mr. Beaton who gave us rooms to sleep and cooked for us about a week. And he was wonderful guide around Canmore and Banff. There standing an old lady we met on the trail.

그리고 바로 이분이 비튼씨로 잠잘 방을 내어 주시고 일주일 동안 요리도 다 해 주시고, 관광 가이드까지 해 주셨다. 옆에는 등산하면서 만난 할머니가 계신다.

And there were two caves on the cliff, and just by the cave there was a sign saying we have some ancient paintings on the rock wall. It says it was several hundred years old and done by the aboriginals.

그리고 절벽에 동굴이 두 개 정도 있었는데 동굴  근처에는 바위 벽에 오래된 그림이 있다는 안내가 있었다. 수백년 되었다고 하는데, 원주민들이 그린 거라고 한다.

Fifth Day of 2009 Summer Trip

We got up comparative early and we departed around 9 in the morning. That was because we already booked and paid for Ice Walk at the Ice Field which is quite long from our camp ground. Usually they got up 11am. But our actual plan was departing 8am. They are always slow and late. I drove over the speed limit and we got their around 5 minutes after 11am. So we late. We got to the building and asked the reception to phone the guide so that they could wait for us a few more minutes.

평소보다 일찍 일어나서 9시 쯤에 출발했다. 아이스 필드에서 아이스 워크를 예약하고 돈을 냈기 때문에 서둘렀다. 원래는 8시에 출발할 예정이었지만 늘 그렇듯이 늦게 출발하게 되었다. 과속을 했지만 11시 5분쯤에 도착을 했다. 늦었다. 건물에 들어가서 리셉션에 있는 사람들에게 부탁해서 가이드에게 전화해서 기다리게 했다.

We started the Ice Walk and came down around 3pm, so it was about four hour’s walk on the ice. The name of the glacier is Athabasca. The guide told us many things: This glacier is 70,000 years old. The glacier is melting down every year. The height is lowering, the location is also backing. and so on.

빙하 체험을 바로 시작해서 오후 3시쯤에 내려왔으니까 약 4시간 정도 걸었다. 빙하의 이름은 아타바스카라고 한다. 가이드가 여러가지를 얘기해 줬는데 빙하가 약 7만년 되었다는 것, 해마다 빙하가 많이 녹는다는 것, 높이가 낮아지고 뒤로 위치가 후퇴한다는 것 등등이었다.

The man in the photo above was my guide and I forgot his name. He came from Quebec doing this job for 30 years. And this year is his last year to retirement. We had bunch of French people in my group, so the guide spoke in both languages (because he’s from Quebec).

위 사진에 있는 사람이 가이든데 이름을 잊어 버렸다. 퀘벡에서 왔고 가이드 생활을 30년간 해 왔다고 하며 올해가 은퇴하기 전 마지막이라고 한다. 우리 그룹에 프랑스 사람들이 꽤 있었는데, 가이드가 영어랑 불어로 얘기를 했다 (퀘벡은 불어를 쓴다).

I was lucky to have a biologist in my group. I was able to hear many things and explanations from her.

우리 그룹에 생물학자가 있어서 여러가지 설명을 또 곁들어 들을 수 있었다.

I was looking down the crevasse, which is the split crack in the ice. It was quite dangerous, so the guide was holding my hands while I was looking down. And look what I and my guide were wearing in mid August! The temperature there was around 10C below freezing point.

얼음의 갈라진 틈인 크레바스를 내려다 보고 있는데, 꽤 위험하기 때문에 가이드가 내 손을  붙잡아 주고 있었다. 그런데, 나랑 가이드랑 어떤 옷을 입고 있는지 한 번 보길. 저게 바로 8월 중순의 옷 차림이다. 빙하 위의 온도는 영하 10도 정도였다.

There was actually another way to get to the glacier – the bus. If you are willing to pay more, you can get the bus. Look at the wheels of the bus – they are huge!

빙하에 가는 데는 또 다른 방법이 있는데, 바로 버스 타는 것이다. 돈만 더 낸다면 버스를 탈 수 있다. 버스 바퀴가 참 거대하다.

After that, we had quick lunch in the parking lot. After that we just started again to the south. And around 6pm, we got to that famous Lake Louise.

그 뒤에 주차장에서 간단히 점심을 먹고 바로 남쪽으로 출발했다. 약 6시 쯤에 그 유명한 루이스 호수에 도착했다.

Just around the lake, there is a nice forest of Bamboo. I quite enjoyed it.

This Lake Louise was so beautiful. But I could not understand why it is so famous. Looking all the lakes around, they are all same beautiful!

루이스 호수는 참 아름다웠다. 하지만 왜 이게 그렇게 유명한지 이해를 못하겠다. 주변의 다른 호수들을 봐도 모두 동일하게 아름다운데.

After that we headed to Canmore, and we got to Mr. Bill Beaton’s house around 9pm. He prepared a dinner, and I enjoyed the Chicken Pie very much. He is amateur chef and he also won many prizes in the contests.

그  후에 캔모어로 가서 빌 비튼씨 집에 저녁 9시 경에 도착했다. 저녁을  준비해 주셔서 먹었는데 치킨 파이가 꽤 맛있었다. 비튼씨는 아마추어 요리산데, 요리 경연대회에서 상도 여러번 탔다.

So this was another day. 이렇게 또 하루가 갔다.
